Frogs back in action on Friday against Arizona
FORT WORTH – Opening Big 12 Conference play against new member Arizona State, No. 22 TCU volleyball fell to the 14th ranked Sun Devils in three sets on Wednesday night inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (8-3, 0-1 Big 12) struggled to find their rhythm early and close out sets. No. 14 Arizona State outhit TCU .272 to .200 but only held a slight advantage in kills and digs on the night. Melanie Parra led the offense with 14 kills and was the only Frog to finish in double figures. She added 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Freshman Evan Hendrix provided a spark off the bench, racking up seven kills and two massive blocks.
Jalyn Gibson notched the first kill of the match, sending a ball right down the line. Knotted up at three, the Sun Devils pulled away with a 4-0 run, forcing TCU to call an early timeout. The Frogs fought back, coming within two points of ASU at 13-15 after Cecily Bramschreiber served up an ace, but three unanswered points restored the Sun Devils lead, which they held onto the rest of the way for a 25-20 set victory.
TCU came out strong, scoring four of the first five points to start the second. Seven Horned Frogs recorded a kill in the set, led by Parra and Gibson, as TCU hit .323. Three straight points gave the Frogs a 15-13 lead at the media timeout, but Arizona State quickly tied the score back up out of the break and went on a 6-1 run to build up a four-point advantage. The Frogs clawed back within two at 23-21 but couldn't quite complete the comeback, falling 25-22.
Needing to win the third to extend the match, TCU turned to Hendrix off the bench. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native erupted for six kills and a solo stuff in the set. Tied at six, Hendrix and Nicholson helped the Frogs take a 10-6 lead and force the Sun Devils to take a timeout. TCU continued to hold the edge, extending its lead to six at 19-13.
Just when it looked like the Frogs were going to send it to four, Arizona State rattled off an 8-1 lead, including winning a key challenge that reversed a TCU point and shifted the momentum. Locked at 22-22, ASU scored three of the final four points to win the set 25-23 and the match.
The Frogs are back in action on Friday, Sept. 27, at 6:30 p.m. CT against Arizona.
