TCU Sweeps Ranked Opponents at Stetson Spring Fling

Horned Frogs defeat No. 12 FAU and No. 14 South Carolina

DeLAND, Fla. -- No. 14 TCU beach volleyball (3-1) had a clean sweep today winning both matches on the final day of the Stetson Spring Fling in DeLand, Fla. The Horned Frogs defeated No. 12. Florida Atlantic, 4-1 and No.14 South Carolina, 3-2.

This was the first time in program history that TCU has defeated two opponents ranked above them in the AVCA coaches poll on the same day.

The top of the lineup was clutch for the Horned Frogs today. All three pairings delivered perfect records. Daniela Alvarez/Tania Moreno Mateeva, Olivia Blackburn/Hailey Brockett and Rochelle Scott/Maria Gonzalez each went undefeated in a thrilling start to the 2021 season.

Alvarez/Moreno finished the weekend with a perfect, 4-0 record. They have yet to drop a set together, as a pair.

With the wins today, TCU has already matched its 2020 season output with three ranked wins. TCU is now 3-1 on the season and 13-9 in all matches.

QUICK HITS AGAINST FLORIDA ATLANTIC:

Caroline White and Josie Miller secured the first point for the Horned Frogs, winning in three sets at the No. 4 position: 21-15,11-21,15-12.
This is the duo's first win together as a pair.
Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno won in two sets at No. 1: 21-16, 21-15.
Alvarez is 8-3 as a Horned Frog, Moreno improves to 3-0.
Olivia Blackburn and Hailey Brockett clinched the Horned Frog victory when they won in two sets: 25-23, 21-16.
Rochelle Scott and Maria Gonzalez won in the No.3 position in three sets: 22-20, 19-21,15-12.
It was Gonzalez' first career win as a Horned Frog.
Hayley Boll and Trinity Cavanaugh won an exhibition match, 19-21, 21-13, 15-9. The win did not count toward the dual score and will not be reflected in their career records.

QUICK HITS AGAINST SOUTH CAROLINA:

Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno scored the first point for the Horned Frogs, winning in two sets at the No. 1 position: 23-21, 21-10.
The duo went 4-0 this weekend.
Alvarez is 9-3 as a Horned Frog, Moreno improves to 4-0.
21-10 is now Alvarez's largest margin of victory in a set over her career.
Rochelle Scott and Maria Gonzalez secured the next point for the Horned Frogs in two nail biting sets at the No. 3 position: 24-22, 24-22.
Olivia Blackburn and Hailey Brockett solidified the Horned Frog victory with a straight set win at the No. 2 position: 21-17, 21-15.
TCU is now 8-4 from the top three pairings, headlined by Alvarez/Moreno at 4-0.

The Horned Frogs return to Fort Worth for their first home tournament of the season on the TCU beach volleyball courts (March 5-6). TCU opens the tournament on Friday, March 5, at 12:20 p.m. against Central Arkansas.
