TCU splits opening day of matches against ranked opponents

DeLAND, Fla. -- No. 14 TCU beach volleyball (1-1) split a couple of hard-fought matches against ranked opposition on its opening day at the Stetson Spring Fling in DeLand, Fla on Saturday. The Horned Frogs defeated No. 13 Florida International, 3-2, and fell to No. 11 Stetson, 3-2.

Two Horned Frog pairings delivered perfect days. Daniela Alvarez / Tania Moreno Mateeva and Caroline White / Rochelle Scott each went undefeated in a thrilling start to the 2021 season.

QUICK HITS AGAINST STETSON:

Caroline White and Rochelle Scott secured the first point for the Horned Frogs, winning in two sets at the No. 4 position: 21-16, 21-18
This is the duo's first win together as a pair and White's first win since 2019 after missing all of last season due to an injury.
Both are now 1-1 in season opening matches over their careers.
Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno won in two sets at No. 1: 21-17, 21-12
This is their first collegiate win as a pair after being partners for Team Spain on the FIVB circuit.
Moreno secured her first collegiate victory in her first attempt.
Kathryn Kramer and Tara Patton won an exhibition match, 21-18, 21-18. The win did not count toward the dual score and will not be reflected in their career records.

QUICK HITS AGAINST FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL:

Jordan Westendorff and Megan Jacobsen took the first match for the Horned Frogs winning in two sets: 21-13, 21-15.
This is Jacobsen's first win as a Horned Frog after transferring from San Diego.
Jacobsen secured her 35th career win with this match victory.
After dropping their match earlier, Westendorff/Jacobsen begin the year with a 1-1 record, playing as the No. 5 pairing.
Caroline White and Rochelle Scott finished off a perfect day with a gritty performance at No. 4, winning in three sets: 23-21, 16-21, 15-11.
This is the duo's second win together as a pair.
White secured her 18th career win and Scott with her 9th.
Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno secured the match victory for the Frogs, winning in two sets: 21-16, 21-11.
This is their second win as a pair in as many matches.
Alvarez is 7-3 as a Horned Frog, Moreno improves to 2-0.
21-11 ties Alvarez's largest margin of victory in a set over her career.

The Spring Fling finishes up tomorrow, Feb. 28 as TCU takes on No. 12 Florida Atlantic at 7 a.m. and No. 14 South Carolina at 11 a.m.
