Horned Frogs boast nation’s top three-score average
FORT WORTH - Coming off a record-breaking weekend, the No. 1 TCU women's rifle team will take part in two matches this weekend. First up is a match at UTEP on Friday. The Horned Frogs and the Miners will then head to Air Force for a triangular match on Sunday.
The Frogs have improved their scores each time they've hit the firing line this season. That culminated in a record-breaking performance last weekend at The Citadel where the team set school marks in smallbore and aggregate score.
TCU currently leads the NCAA with a three-score aggregate average, which determines the field of eight at the NCAA Championships, of 4,730. Overall on the season, the Frogs sit second nationally in aggregate average at 4,721.8. TCU leads the nation in air rifle average (2,377) and is second in smallbore (2,344.8).
Stephanie Grundsoee has been TCU's top shooter in both disciplines in all five matches this season. She ranks second nationally in both guns, averaging a 597.8 in air rifle and a 591 in smallbore. Kristen Hemphill set personal bests in both disciplines her last time out. She ranks fifth in smallbore (587.4) and aggregate (1,181.0). Serving as a counter for the first time in her career at The Citadel, Nina Schuett fired a career-high 596 in air rifle.
Making the journey to UTEP on Friday will be Grundsoee, Schuett, Stephanie Allan, Noelle Christensen, Abigail Gordon and Grace Taschuk. Heading to Air Force on Sunday will be Allan, Gordon, Grundsoee, Hemphill, Schuett, Taschuk and Elizabeth Marsh.
UTEP has fired just one match this season and that came back on Oct. 10, 2020 at Jacksonville State. Morgahn Warner was the Miners' top shooter with an 1,149 aggregate. She led the squad with a 572 in smallbore, while Jonna Warnken led the team in air rifle with a 580.
Air Force is currently seventh in the NCAA with a three score aggregate of 4,688. The Falcons are led by Peter Fiori, who ranks ninth in the NCAA with an aggregate average of 1,177.8.
Both matches are slated to begin at 9 a.m. (CT).
