EUGENE, Ore. -- TCU opened up competition at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., and Scotty Newton earned Second-Team All-America honors in the long jump on Wednesday.
Newton, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., is a triple jump specialist and no stranger to competing on the national stage at historic Hayward Field as he has earned a bid to outdoor nationals the previous two years, but Wednesday marked the first time he would take part in the long jump at NCAAs.
Newton did not disappoint. After scratching on his first two attempts, he buckled down and secured a mark of 24 feet 7.75 inches (7.51 meters) on his final attempt. Newton finished 11th overall, earning Second-Team All-America honors for the second time this season. Newton also represented the Horned Frogs at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this year.
Newton will return to the pit on Friday for the triple jump finals, which are scheduled to begin at 7:40 p.m. CT.
