Oct. 3, 2016 FORT WORTH -- The 2016-17 rifle season got off to a loud start as the team tied the 2012 school record for aggregate score, shooting a 4,718 in a win at The Citadel.
"I could not have asked for a better start to the season," raved head coach Karen Monez. "With several solid individual scores fired this weekend, they were effective as a team. Practice scores have been impressive this past month leading up to this weekend and the team demonstrated they have the confidence to take those scores from the practice line to a match."
The competition got off on the right foot as the team fired a 2,340 in smallbore, posting the fourth-best mark in school history. All five shooters designated as counters fired a 580 or better, led by a 587 from freshman Casey Lutz. The top 10 scores in the match were fired by the Horned Frogs.
Rachel Garner and Ariana Grabowski chipped in with identical marks of 585. Mindy Miles contributed a 583 to round out the scoring.
TCU carried its strong performance into the air rifle portion of the match, firing a 2,378, the second-highest mark in program history. Once again, TCU turned in the match's top 10 scores. The group produced four scores of 591 or better.
Rachel Garner's season got off to a solid start as she bested her previous career high of 592 by five points with a 597 to tie Mindy Miles for the best score in the match. Nicole Hankey slotted third among shooters with a 593 followed by Casey Lutz's personal best score of 591. While not factoring in the team score, freshman Catherine Miller also shot a personal best 588 in the discipline.
Garner was the top shooter overall in the match with a personal best 1,182 aggregate score.
"I could not be more excited or proud of how the team performed," said Monez. "They are ready for the challenges ahead of them this season.
TCU returns to the firing line this weekend when it travels to Fairbanks, Alaska for a pair of matches. The first match, a three-team match against Alaska and Air Force, is set for Saturday. Monday's match is slated to be a dual match against Air Force.
