GWANGJU, South Korea – TCU track and field's Ronnie Baker opened his time representing Team USA at the World University Games with a pair of race victories on Wednesday in Gwangju, South Korea.
In the first round, Baker posted the fastest time among all competitors over the nine heats of the 100-meter dash at 10.18 seconds. The time automatically advanced him to the next round later in the day.
Round two was a similar story as Baker, battling a headwind (-1.1 m/s), won heat three behind a time of 10.35 seconds. His mark in the second round was the second fastest among the remaining sprinters in the 100 meters.
Competing in his first international meet of his young career, Baker is coming off of a stellar performance at the USATF Championships, where he posted a pair of wind-aided and lifetime best 9.94's in the event and finished seventh in the final as one of America's top 100-meter sprinters.
Baker returns to the track at 3 a.m. CDT on Thursday, July 9, looking for a chance at a berth in the final at 4:45 a.m. CDT. He will be joined by fellow American and second-round heat winner Markesh Woodson in one of the two semifinal heats.
