The Rundown
It was a tale of two halves Monday for the Horned Frogs as TCU shot 50 percent from the field, including 54.5 percent from deep, in the second half. The Frogs opened the period on a 20-3 run to bust the game wide open and improve to 8-4 on the season.
Shepherd posted his sixth career double-double, scoring 15 points on 6-of-13 from the field. The junior also corralled a career-high 19 rebounds in helping TCU hold a 45-30 rebounding edge. Not to be outdone, Malique Trent and Chauncey Collins chipped in with 12 points apiece, respectively. Junior Brandon Parrish rounded out the Horned Frog notables, dropping 10 points on 4-of-9 from the field.
For the game, TCU, who connected on nine three-pointers and held its second-straight opponent to under 50 points, did most of its damage inside, holding a 26-10 advantage in the paint. The Frogs also posted a 24-12 edge in points off turnovers.
TCU opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 36-20 advantage, which included a three ball from Trent at the 18:08 mark. Chris Washburn, who saw his first action since last March Monday, would make it a 41-23 ballgame a few plays later, stealing the rock and scoring on the other end off a dish from Michael Williams with a little over 14 minutes remaining in the second stanza of action. In all, the Purple and White opened the half on a 20-3 run.
By the time TCU knocked down three-straight triples midway through, including two from Parrish alone, the Frogs had built a 30-point advantage at the 8-minute mark. The Purple and White coasted the rest of the way to move to 8-4 on the season.
The two teams opened the game going back and forth the first couple of trips, but Parrish would nail a jumper from the corner off an assist from Washburn. A few plays later, Collins would rip the nets from deep to give TCU a 13-12 advantage with a little over 11 minutes remaining in the opening frame.
Delaware State would continue to battle though, scoring the next four before Trent stole the rock and went coast to coast for a tough layup to pull the Frogs within one at 16-15. Collins then proceeded to tickle the twin from deep, while getting fouled at about the 9-minute mark, to propel the Purple and White up 19-16.
TCU would outscore the Hornets the rest of the way 7-4 to take a 26-20 lead into the break.
