STILLWATER, Okla. -- TCU pulled within eight midway through the second half Saturday, but Oklahoma State claimed a 69-48 decision inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Rundown
With the loss, the Horned Frogs, who only trailed by two at intermission after closing the opening frame on a 10-4 run, fell to 8-5 overall and 0-1 in league play. The Cowboys improved to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
TCU was led on the night by Chauncey Collins and Malique Trent. The duo had 11 points apiece, respectively, to carry the Purple and White. In only his second game back, junior Chris Washburn just missed double-figures, tallying seven points and five boards.
OSU was carried by Jeff Newberry's 23-point outing. Jawun Evans also scored in double-figures, totaling 13 points on 2-of-7 from the field.
For the game, the Frogs did most of their damage off the bench, outscoring the Cowboys, 28-8. TCU also controlled points in the paint Saturday to the tune of 26-24.
Oklahoma State opened the second half on a 10-1 run, but Trent would stall the attack, hitting a runner with 14 minutes left to make the scoreboard read 36-27. OSU would continue its run until Michael Williams hit a floater inside the paint to pull the Frogs within 38-30 with 10:54 showing on the clock.
TCU would continue to battle a few minutes later as Trent blew by his defender and laid it in off the glass to make it a 47-35 ballgame, but Oklahoma State was able to push its advantage to 56-36 before Collins connected on an old fashioned three-point play.
The Purple and White couldn't cut into the deficit the rest of the way, falling to 0-1 in league play.
The two teams opened the game going back and forth the first couple of trips, until Washburn made it a 7-5 ballgame, scoring on an up and under move with 15:47 showing on the clock. A few plays later, Collins ripped the nets for three to pull TCU within 9-8.
Oklahoma State went on a mini run to take a 16-8 advantage midway through, but Vladimir Brodziansky would have nothing of it, scoring on a turn-around jumper at the 7:47 mark to make it a 16-10 ballgame. Washburn would then connect on back-to-back trips to inch the Frogs closer at 22-14.
TCU would outscore the Cowboys the rest of the half, 10-4, to pull within 26-24 at the break.
Quote of the Game
Trent Johnson
"We have a lot of work to do to figure it out. We aren't where we need to be in terms of mental or physical toughness versus good people. We need to get it corrected and find out how competitive we want to be in this league."
