The Rebels, who come into Friday night's contest with a 5-6-5 overall record, are 1-2-1 in Mountain West Conference play this fall. UNLV went 1-1-0 last weekend, dropping Air Force 1-0 before battling Wyoming to a 1-1 double overtime draw in Laramie, Wyo.
Against UW, the Rebels' Ashleigh Shoughro put UNLV ahead in the contest early in the first half, but Wyoming's Carmen Blume tied the game in the 71st minute to bring the score to 1-1. For the match, the Cowgirls held a 16-10 advantage in shots, while also posting a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
UNLV has netted a total of 13 goals this season with three coming from sophomore Jenna Larkin. Both Shannon Hughes and Colette Jepson have each found the back of the net twice, while several Rebels have scored once on the year.
Alicia Lugo has had a solid year between the posts as she has recorded 86 saves and a 0.93 goals-against-average. Lugo, who earned all-conference accolades last fall, has also posted five shutouts in 2009.
Scouting TCU
TCU heads into its final road game this fall with an 8-8-0 record, including a 1-4-0 mark in the Mountain West Conference. The Horned Frogs went 0-2-0 last weekend, dropping hard fought road contests to Utah and BYU. Overall, the Purple and White, who have scored a league-leading 27 goals on the year, will look to win their third match on the road this fall in Las Vegas.
In its last outing, TCU missed on several offensive chances last Saturday night, dropping a hard fought 2-0 decision to No. 11 BYU. The Horned Frogs, who continually pressured the nationally ranked Cougars for most of the night, totaled 10 shots in a physical match in Provo, while claiming a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks in the contest. The Frogs, who's offensive attack found themselves deep in BYU territory many times, watched as one shot hit the post and Cougar keeper McKinzie Olson made a kick save midway through the second half to keep the Frogs off the board.
Sophomore Jordan Calhoun continues to lead the Frog offensive attack, wracking up eight goals and six assists. Senior Lizzy Karoly has also been productive this fall as she has scored five goals, including one game-winner. Kaylie Garcia has come on as of late, netting two goals and three assists for a total of seven points.
All-Time Series Breakdown
TCU and UNLV will be playing for the sixth time this Friday night. UNLV, who leads the all-time series 4-0-1, battled the Frogs to a 1-1 double overtime draw last fall. In the match, Jackie Torda scored a late goal to tie the contest at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.
Friday Night Showdown
When TCU takes to the pitch on Friday, the Frogs will look to better their chances of qualifying for the 2009 Mountain West Conference Championship. TCU, who has recorded three points in the MWC standings this fall, trails UNLV in the conference standings by one point. With a win, the Horned Frogs would move to 2-4-0 in the conference and overtake the Rebels in the standings for the final spot in the conference tournament, which will take place in Provo, Utah. The Rebels, who have three conference games remaining on their schedule, would automatically qualify for postseason play with a win at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Match Notes
The Purple and White will be looking for their first win against the Rebels in program history on Friday night. Overall, TCU and UNLV have played nearly even the last couple of years with the two teams battling to a 1-1 draw last fall, while UNLV dropped the Frogs 1-0 in 2007. Both of the previous two matches have been played in Fort Worth, but TCU went 1-1-0 at Peter Johann Memorial Field last fall, winning its opening round conference tournament match against San Diego State before falling in overtime to Utah to close their 2008 run.
