PROVO, Utah - TCU missed on several offensive chances on Saturday night, dropping a hard fought 2-0 decision to No. 11 BYU in front of 1,996 spectators at South Stadium. The Horned Frogs, who continually pressured the No. 11 team in the country for most of the night, totaled 10 shots in a physical match in Provo, while claiming a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks in the contest. The Frogs, who's offensive attack found themselves deep in BYU territory many times, watched as one shot hit the post and Cougar keeper McKinzie Olson made a kick save midway through the second half to keep the Frogs off the board.
"We played a full 90 minutes tonight and I was pleased with our effort," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "We will be in good shape for the rest of the year if we continue to play like that."
Early in the match, Jackie Torda appeared to have put TCU ahead in the contest, but her shot just missed to the left of the net.
Following a goal by BYU's Lauren Anderson in the 11th minute, Nikki Wilbur tried to tie the contest at 1-1 off a free kick by Katie Taylor, but Wilbur's header missed finding the back of the net.
Jordan Calhoun continued the Horned Frog pressure midway through the half, but her shot from the right side of the box was knocked out of bounds by a Cougar defender.
With only two minutes remaining in the first half, Torda appeared to have a shot from inside the box off a header from Calhoun, but the ball just missed the left side of the goal to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of BYU.
Following the break, TCU came out hot as the Frogs' constant pressure on BYU produced several scoring opportunities. Senior Lizzy Karoly tried to connect from outside the box, but her shot was blocked by a Cougar defender. A few moments later, Torda continued the Frog pressure, connecting off a pass from Taylor, but her header couldn't break the 1-0 score.
Calhoun, a sophomore from Norman, Okla, appeared to have scored from the left side of the field, but Olson made a kick save to keep the Frogs off the board. A few seconds later, Calhoun made a run into the Cougar defense, but her shot rocketed off the post.
Following a goal by Carlee Payne in the 57th minute, Karoly tried to rally the Frogs, playing the ball through the legs of a Cougar defender on a run, but her shot was blocked by a BYU defender.
With 17 minutes remaining, Torda shot a rope from the middle of the box, but just missed finding the back of the net.
Late into the match, Michelle Nguyen, a senior from Richardson, took a pass from Kaylie Garcia and just had her shot deflected by a Cougar defender.
With little time on the clock, Karoly made a run and beat Olson, but her cross to a running Calhoun couldn't find the back of the net.
BYU outshot the Frogs, 12-10, on Saturday night. Calhoun, Cody and Torda led the TCU offense with two shots apiece.
Junior Kelsey Walters, who had a solid night in goal, saved four shots, including three in the second half against the Cougars.
With the loss, TCU moved to 8-8-0 on the year and 1-4-0 in the Mountain West Conference, while BYU improved to 13-2-2 and 4-0-1 in the MWC.
