MANSFIELD, Texas- The TCU equestrian team defeated their I-35 rivals, the Baylor Bears 9-6 Saturday in Mansfield. With the win, the Frogs evened up their season series with Baylor at one apiece after the Bears had come out victorious 8-4 in October earlier this season.
Kindel Huffman continued her string of outstanding performances this season, turning in possibly her best outing of the year. Huffman went 4-0 on the day, a new school record. She also tied her previous record of two MVPs in the same game, by earning honors in Horsemanship and Reining. It was her fourth Horsemanship MVP of the season, as she ran her record up to 10-0, the best in the nation. Also of note was Huffman moving into the all-time TCU lead for consecutive wins in a single event with eleven, a streak that dates back to last season.
"It was very exciting," Huffman said of her performance. "I'm very blessed and I want to thank the coaches for helping me at practice, and God for giving me the ability to ride."
The Western team led the way as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, after sweeping the Horsemanship event. Chloe Baker was able to move into fourth place on the all-time consecutive wins list for a single event, as she won for the fifth consecutive time in Horsemanship.
In the Reining the Frogs split points with Baylor, 2-2. Ashton Mickunas continued her hot streak, winning for her third consecutive time, the longest current streak in the Reining. Huffman's MVP honors were her second in just four trips in the event this season, and improving her record to 3-1.
The Hunt Seat team was able to give its opponent a tough fight for the second straight outing. The Frogs tied Baylor in Equitation over Fences 2-2, and were edged out in Equitation on the Flat 2-1-1. Carrie von Uhlit scored an 83 in Equitation over Fences to tie Toni Rogers for the fifth highest score in TCU history in the event.
"It was a great match today," Head Coach Gary Reynolds said. "The Horsemanship riders are really on target, we still need to work on our Reining a little bit. The Hunt Seat girls continue to improve and we just have some things to work on before we get to nationals."
Up next for the Horned Frogs will be the finale of the home-and-home with their cross-town rival SMU on March 29 in Dallas. The Mustangs defeated the Frogs 6-5 in their first meeting on November 10.
