FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU's Don Sommer has been named college football's 2008 National Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year by FootballScoop.com.
Sommer, in his eighth year at TCU, is responsible for the overall direction, design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for all sports at TCU. He holds the Master Strength & Conditioning Coach (MSCC) certification. Sommer runs a program that stresses competing, mindset development, injury prevention, strength and speed.
"In addition to my two kids at home, I have another 120 here to watch over," Sommer said. "It makes me proud to see them grow into men. These guys come to TCU as boys, but they leave as men.
"Football is a violent sport. Every play there is going to be a hammer and a nail. We teach our kids to be the hammer."
Sommer was nominated for the honor by his peers and was selected by a panel of former coaches and players. He will receive his award at the American Football Coaches Association Convention in January.
The 11th-ranked Horned Frogs face No. 9 Boise State in the Dec. 23 Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego.
