Karen Monez Named Rifle Coach

Karen Monez, a veteran of many international shooting competitions and holder of two world records, has been named TCU's head rifle coach, Athletics Director Eric Hyman announced today.
Monez has participated in several different shooting disciplines over the past 35 years, including smallbore rifle, air rifle, 300 meter highpower, air pistol, smallbore silhouette, highpower silhouette and cowboy action shooting. During her career, she has earned one gold medal at the world championship in women's air rifle (1979 in Seoul, Korea) and set world records in the women's air rifle (1979) and in the standard rifle 50 meters 3x20 competition (1989).
"Shooting has been wonderful for me," said Monez. "It's a sport for life. After a long competitive career, making this transition to coaching is very exciting for me. I'm ready to give back to the sport which has given me so much over the years."
Monez has spent 25 years of her life in military service, three years as a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit International Rifle Section, then 22 years as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve Shooting team. She also was a resident athlete at the United States Training Center from 1989-1992. Her career has taken her to international shooting competitions in 19 foreign countries.
Her list of shooting accomplishments is long and impressive. She was a member of three Championship of Americas teams (1977, 1981 and 1985); three World Championship teams (1978, 1979 and 1982), and won individual medals in five World Cup competitions, including four gold medals. She competed in U.S. International Shooting National Championships from 1974 to 1998, winning eight individual titles and 19 team teams. She competed in National Rifle Championships from 1973 to 1992, logging 15 individual titles and four team titles. She also has competed in NRA Indoor Sectional National Championships from 1974 to 1999, in Silhouette Rifle National Championships for 1986 to 1992 and in Cowboy Action Shooting National and World Championships since 1999, winning numerous individual and team titles along the way. During her shooting career, she has totaled 55 individual and 42 team national records.
Monez is a life member of the National Rifle Association and is also affiliated with USA Shooting, the Texas State Rifle Association and the Single Action Shooting Society. She and her husband, John Chapman, reside in Weatherford, Texas where they ranch and raise cattle and quarter horses.
