DENTON, Texas - TCU revisited the winning column tonight with a non-conference midweek win in Denton over North Texas. Three Horned Frogs (seniors Ellen Rehme and Dominika Szabo and sophomore Anna Vaughn) tallied double-digit kills and junior Erin Ludeke dished out 46 assists to tie for the third-most in a three-game match.
Although North Texas got off to a 3-0 start, sophomore Anna Vaughn came back with the Horned Frogs' answer, scoring the first three points for TCU. From there, the teams exchanged points and the lead. The scariest stretch contained three consecutive errors before Coach Prentice Lewis took a timeout to regroup. TCU soon took the lead and won off of a series of kills from Dominika Szabo, including a curious off-speed, leaving the Frogs up 30-25.
The Frogs scored the three-to-zero run in the second round, including an ace from freshman Talaya Whitfield. The Mean Green got angry after a touch call turned against it 21-17 (the Frogs) and the team never recovered. Szabo again scored the game point, 30-26, this time off the block.
The scare from North Texas had ended, as the Frogs shut them down from the start of the third game with three consecutive blocks. The stellar defense continued when Ellen Rehme stopped three straight attacks in the back row during one volley. An early celebration by the Mean Green led to a TCU point at 8-12 and the Frogs were up by as much as 13 points before they won 30-18.
Rehme tallied her second double-double of the season with her 15 kills and 10 digs while Szabo logged her best hitting percentage in a while with a .583 performance (14 kills, zero errors, 24 attempts). Whitfield collected another 18 digs to add to her already record-number and Anna Vaughn led the offense with 16 kills.
The Frogs climb to 15-8, 5-3 in C-USA with the win, while North Texas falls to 4-17, 3-6 in the Sun Belt. TCU returns to Conference USA action this weekend as it hosts USF and UAB 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Saturday's match against the Blazers will be the Frogs' designated "Dig for the Cure" contest.
