TUCSON, Ariz. – For the third consecutive year, TCU's Irene Jepkemboi stood atop the podium at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the javelin throw. The junior launched a season-best 54.44m (178-7) throw to convincingly defend her title and become the first woman in conference history to win three straight titles in the event.
Jepkemboi also put the TCU women on the board with 10 points with her victory. On the track, the Horned Frogs positioned themselves for more points as the weekend continues.
In the 1500m runs, Mohamed Kowa and Georgia Scott advanced to Saturday's event finals. Kowa hung with the middle of the pack and made his move in the final 200m working his way into the top three to earn an auto-qualifier spot in 3:45.20. For the women, Scott cruised behind BYU's Jane Hedengren, building a nearly eight second cushion on the rest of the field. She comfortably crossed the finish line in 4:16.92 to advance.
To no surprise Indya Mayberry turned in one of the top 200m times in the prelims. The defending champions in the event, she won her heat in a season-best 22.73. Joining her was freshman Bailey Johnson, who also advanced to the final, running a sub-23 for the first time in her career (22.87). The TCU duo will represent the Frogs in the final on Saturday evening.
Coming into the meet as the top overall seeded runner in the 400m hurdles, Jayden Douglas primed himself for a run at his first Big 12 title. The junior ran an easy 50.34, letting up as closed his race. With more left in the tank, Douglas will have his chance to run for gold and a spot on the podium Saturday evening.
The Frogs are back in action on Friday, May 15, for Day Two of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
