Freshman cards a three-under 69 in opening round of The Ally
WEST POINT, Miss. – On an otherwise challenging opening day at The Ally at Old Waverly Golf Club, Ella Forss delivered for No. 27 TCU.
The freshman signed for a three-under 69 in Monday's opening round and is tied for fourth individually. Forss was bogey-free. She made her charge up the leaderboard on the back nine, closing birdie on holes 11, 14 and 16, all of which are par-4's.
Originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, Forss has now shot par-or-better in a team-leading 4-of-7 rounds. She has been TCU's top first round performer in the Horned Frogs' last two outings. Forss shot a 66 (-4) on Sept. 19 at Belmar Golf Club in the Schooner Fall Classic.
She will start round two just one stroke back of co-leaders Valentine Delon (Virginia Tech), Lisa Herman (Ole Miss) and Avery Weed (Mississippi State).
In her first trip around Old Waverly, Forss was one of only two competitors in the 90-player field to finish without a bogey.
No. 24 Ole Miss holds a four-shot lead at seven strokes under par.
The first round ended with TCU tied for seventh place alongside Virginia Tech at six-over 294. The Horned Frogs shot even par on the front nine and held a share of fourth place at the turn. Ultimately, it was the 18th hole that undid TCU's steady play. The Frogs added five strokes to their collective scorecard on the final green and slid three spots down the leaderboard. TCU was one-under on the second nine up until that point.
The Horned Frogs are three strokes off No. 7 Florida and five back of No. 10 Oklahoma State and Kentucky.
Kirstin Angosta, Camille Min-Gaultier and Sofie Dimitrova all came in at three-over to round out the countable scoring. The trio are tied for 42nd.
Gracie McGovern is tied for 50th at four-over.
Angosta matched Forss with three birdies. She carded a two-under 34 on the front nine.
The Frogs will begin Tuesday's second round on the front nine and play alongside No. 9 Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech. TCU will tee off in nine-minute starting at 8:30 a.m.
