TCU earns home victory on Halloween
FORT WORTH – Behind a gritty defensive effort and a couple of game-changing plays, TCU stormed back to take down Kansas on a Halloween afternoon at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
Â
Jaden Craig went 13 for 29 for 141 yards and was the leading rusher for the Frogs with 87 yards. Jordan Dwyer led the team with six receptions, and Kari Ashley led with 50 receiving yards. Max Carroll had a big performance defensively for TCU with eight tackles and a pick six, while Jamel Johnson led the team in tackles with 10.
Â
The game started slow for both teams, with the two defenses controlling the game. Kansas broke the deadlock with a field goal late in the first quarter. With a second field goal and a touchdown for the Jayhawks in the second quarter, the Frogs trailed 13-0 at half.
Â
TCU's defense got it rolling in the start of the third quarter. Carroll stuffed the Jayhawks on a quarterback keeper at the one-yard line along with teammate Zach Chapman. The very next KU drive, Carroll picked off Ballard and returned it 60 yards for the score to get TCU on the board at 13-7.
Â
The offense would carry that momentum, capping a five-play, 72-yard drive with a 28-yard touchdown run by Ace Theus. It was the freshman's first career score to give TCU its first lead of the day with 26 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Â
Kansas was able to respond though, knocking a field goal through in the red zone to go up by two with just five minutes remaining in the game.
Â
Looking to answer, the Frogs orchestrated a 13-play, 84-yard drive to retake the lead. Craig took over on the ground, rushing for 37 yards, while converting key third downs through the air with a 17-yard completion to Small and a seven-yard strike to Dwyer.Â
Â
Just when TCU moved into field goal range, Craig broke loose on a 17-yard touchdown run and found Dwyer for the two-point conversion to put the Frogs up 22-16 with 1:04 to play.
Â
With the game on the line, the Frogs' defense stood tall and refused Kansas a potential game-winning drive to close out the victory for TCU.
