Sophomore shoots a five-under 135 at Schooner Fall Classic
NORMAN, Okla. – Gracie McGovern arrived at TCU in August of 2024 ranked No. 9 in the Global Junior Golf Rankings.
On Saturday north of the Red River, the sophomore looked every bit of the blue chip player the Horned Frogs were promised.
McGovern carded a five-under 135 on Saturday over two rounds at the par-70 Belmar Golf Club in Norman, Okla., on day one of the Schooner Fall Classic.
She etched the fourth-lowest 36-hole score onto No. 24 TCU's program record book.
McGovern fired a 67 in round two, good for a collegiate low-18 personal best, and is tied for sixth with 18 holes remaining in TCU's third-of-five fall tournaments.
The Scottsdale, Ariz., native was one of three Frogs to finish in the red on a day that was initially intended to be a single-round affair. Teams agreed to play 36 holes due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday.
Camille Min-Gaultier and Yvette O'Brien are tied for 17th at two-under 138. O'Brien and McGovern each shot even or under par in both rounds.
The trio has TCU sitting a solo fourth in a 16-team field. The Horned Frogs signed off at five-under (281-274 = 555). TCU's second round score was tied for the third-lowest of any team.
The final round is slated for a 10 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday. Should mother nature cooperate, TCU will begin four strokes back of second place Iowa State. Fellow Big 12 member Oklahoma State holds an 11-shot lead at 16-under (544).
McGovern is within three strokes of individual leaders Meg Tilma (Oklahoma) and Sydney Givens (Georgia).
The sophomore recorded just one bogey over the marathon day. Starting at the sixth tee box, McGovern, picked up three birdies over her first half-dozen holes. She closed birdie on holes, two, 12 and 13 over a bogey-free second round.
McGovern finished under par in consecutive rounds for the first time in her TCU tenure.
Alongside McGovern, Min-Gaultier catapulted TCU, which sat in eighth place after 18 holes, back into the top third of the leaderboard as the tournament shifted into the second round. Min-Gaultier started her second stroll across the Oklahoma farmlands four-under (31) through nine holes. She eventually matched McGovern's second round 67.
O'Brien, playing just her third collegiate event, set low-18 and low-36 records. She shot a two-under 68 in round two. From Greenwich, Conn., O'Brien bagged a team-leading nine birdies.
As a team, TCU parred a tournament-leading 129 holes.
The Horned Frogs are hunting their third vice championship in the last six years at the Schooner Fall Classic. TCU finished as the outright runner-up in 2020 and 2022.
The Frogs will tee off on holes 4-6 alongside Houston and UCF on Sunday.
