TCU sets program record for low-54 total, takes vice championship
NORMAN, Okla. – It was a special day at the Schooner Fall Classic.
Gracie McGovern finished as the co-medalist and TCU broke its program record for low-54 hole total on Sunday at Belmar Golf Club.
McGovern shot a nine-under 201 and shared championship honors with Georgia's Sydney Givens.
The 24th-ranked Horned Frogs placed as vice champions behind McGovern. TCU posted an 11-under 829. The Frogs began the day in fourth at five-under (555). The tournament was condensed to two days due to thunderstorms in the greater Oklahoma City area.
TCU signed a second straight scorecard of 274 (-6). Only team champion Oklahoma State (-18) matched the Horned Frogs' performance over the final two rounds.
The Frogs entered the clubhouse three strokes clear of third place and tournament host Oklahoma.
TCU notched its third outright runner-up finish in the last six years at the Schooner, which was founded in 2013 by late country music star Toby Keith. The tournament continues to be played in his honor and all proceeds support the Toby Keith Foundation, which benefits children battling cancer.
The prizes awarded to McGovern and TCU were guitar-inspired trophies.
McGovern became TCU's 41st medalist and the third member of the program's active roster to win a tournament. She is one of two players in program history to finish first at Belmar.
Her 54-hole score was the second-lowest in program and event history. McGovern shattered her previous collegiate low-54 by 13 strokes. She cracked the top-10 of the final leaderboard just once prior to TCU's venture north of the Red River.
The tournament entered a weather delay with five holes remaining. McGovern was tied for first at eight-under. She teed off on hole four in a round that began with a shotgun start. The sophomore McGovern promptly sank a birdie putt – one of four for the day – on the 16th green as play resumed. She opened up a two-stroke lead with a birdie on the first green. A bogey on the subsequent hole is all that prevented McGovern from winning the undisputed championship.
McGovern bogeyed just two holes total.
She was one of two Horned Frogs to finish in the red and inside the top-10.
Fellow sophomore Camille Min-Gaultier tied for ninth (-4, 206). She was five-under over her final two rounds. Min-Gaultier picked up birdie on holes four, 15 and 18 and was the lone TCU player to post a clean scoresheet following the stoppage.
Min-Gaultier has notched three straight top-10's to begin her sophomore campaign and placed T10-or-better in six of her last nine starts dating back to March. The All-American has now scored par-or-better in 22-of-43 (52 percent) of her career rounds played.
Sofia Barroso Sá carved out a career milestone in her own right. The lone senior in TCU's lineup, Barroso Sá sandwiched birdies on holes one and three and solidified the Frogs' vice championship. The second of the two birdie putts was her 322nd in TCU purple. Barroso Sá moved to third in program history for career birdies, surpassing 2020 Olympian Sanna Nuutinen. She needs 66 more to supplant Lois Lau atop the all-time record book.
Barroso Sá's efforts put an exclamation mark on the Frogs' strong close. TCU was five-under on the front nine and minus-two over its last five holes.
Sofie Dimitrova and Barroso Sá each shot even-par 70's. Dimitrova tied for 37th while Barroso Sá was a part of a gridlock for 44th.
Dimitrova has finished even in the final round in her last pair of starts.
Yvette O'Brien tied for 52nd to round out the TCU lineup. O'Brien entered the day two-under.
A balanced performance is ultimately what carried TCU to the top of the leaderboard and its historical archives. The Horned Frogs tallied a tournament-leading 190 pars and notched the second-fewest bogeys (32) of any team.
TCU now breaks for a week before playing its penultimate fall tournament, the Mercedez Benz Intercollegiate, on Oct. 5-7 at Cherokee Golf Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
