Frogs off to best start since 2015
FORT WORTH – No. 23 TCU wrapped up another perfect week in Schollmaier Arena, closing non-conference play with a 3-1 win over Rice on Saturday to mark the Horned Frogs to their best start in program history since 2015.
The defending AVCA National Player of the Week and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Melanie Parra, notched her sixth match this season with at least 20 kills. She led the Frogs (8-2, 0-0 Big 12) with 24 kills on the night, followed by Becca Kelley and Jalyn Gibson, who finished in double figures. Setter Lily Nicholson had a strong night guiding the offense with 50 assists, including the 1,000th of her career in the first set.
Defensively, it was another impressive performance as TCU tallied 13.5 blocks as a team. Sarah Sylvester led the Frogs with seven, while Parra recorded a career-high six rejections. Three players also finished with double-digit digs, paced by Cecily Bramschreiber with a season-high 20. Playing against her mother, Rice head coach Genny Volpe, Alice Volpe registered 10 digs to help the Frogs win the family affair.
Rice came out and threw the first punch, taking set one from TCU. Both teams were tied late at 21, but the Owls scored four consecutive points to grab a 25-21 win in the opening set.
TCU responded in the second, rattling off a quick 7-2 run to start things off and force Rice to call for an early timeout. The Frogs remained in control the rest of the way, leading by as many as 10. Parra tallied six kills alone in the second, including the final point of the set to even the score at 1-1.
All tied up, TCU scored seven of the first eight points to start the third. The Frogs continued to roll to a 20-7 lead, but Rice didn't back down. The Owls made a ferocious comeback attempt with an 11-2 run and a 4-0 burst to claw all the way back within two. After four straight set points, Kelley slammed down her ninth kill of the match to give TCU a 25-22 set three win.
The Frogs handled business in the fourth to close things out. A pair of 4-0 runs early were the difference for TCU, who hit .323 in the set and tallied 5.5 blocks.
TCU opens Big 12 Conference play next week at home with the first-ever top 25 volleyball match in Schollmaier on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 8 p.m. CT.
