Alonso reaches round of 16 in main singles draw
WACO, Texas – TCU measured its underclassmen against the Lone Star State and came away with a half-dozen victories at the ITA Texas Regional.
Julian Alonso, Filip Apltauer and Kaj Quirijns represented the purple and white at the annual regional championship event from Friday-Sunday at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco. The sophomore trio collected five combined singles wins. Apltauer and Quirijns also reached the round of 16 of the main doubles draw.
Alonso further solidified his placement in TCU's projected singles lineup ahead of the dual season. He was seeded 13th in the 64-man main draw. Alonso triumphed twice to reach Saturday's round of 16. The Barcelona native first got the better of Miguel Alonso of UTSA, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Alonso then rolled to a 6-1, 7-5 straight set win vs. Rice's Eduardo Morais. He ultimately bowed out to eventual semifinalist and 49th-ranked Zsombor Velcz (Baylor), 6-3, 7-6 (1).
The showing continued Alonso's steady ascension since cracking the Horned Frogs lineup during the 2024 outdoor season. He has won nine of his last 12 singles matches dating back to March. Alonso improved his fall invitationals record to 8-6 overall and 4-2 this season.
Apltauer, a transfer from Tennessee, defeated two Power Four conference players in consolation play. He cruised past Texas A&M's Grant Lothringer, 6-4, 6-2, and outlasted Brody Nejedly of Texas Tech in a round of 16 match that went deep into a super tiebreaker. Apltauer dropped a 6-7 (4) first frame, evened the match at 1-all with a 6-2 set two triumph and prevailed 13-11 in the tiebreaker.
He and Quirijns also teamed up on a main draw doubles win. Partnering for the first time, the duo eased by Merse Deli and Benjamin McDonald, 8-4.
Quirijns got on the board in singles in the qualifying consolation round, defeating the Wildcats' Tomas Tischner via a 6-4, 6-2 margin.
TCU next competes in its penultimate fall tournament when it hosts the inaugural ITA Central Sectional Championship on Nov. 7-10 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The tournament represents the last chance for players to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships. Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted have already punched their tickets in singles and are entered in the doubles draw for Sectionals. By virtue of hosting, TCU is awarded one wild card in singles and doubles.
