Horned Frogs off to best start in six seasons

FORT WORTH - JaKobe Coles' 20 points helped lead the TCU men's basketball team to its best start to a season in six years with a 93-74 win over Alcorn State Tuesday in Schollmaier Arena.

The Horned Frogs last started 5-0 during the 2017-18 season when they started 12-0.

Coles scored 17 of his points during 15 minutes of action in the first half which TCU led 41-33 at halftime. The junior from Denton made his career-high fourth 3-pointer in the second half and finished 4-of-5 from beyond-the-arc and 7-of-11 from the field.

TCU's lead grew to as many as 26 points with 44 seconds to play before Alcon State (1-5) scored the game's last seven points.

The Horned Frogs made their most free throws from a Jamie Dixon coached team, going 32-of-39 for 82.1 percent. That number included a 20-of-21 effort from the line in the second half. TCU also shared the ball well by evidence of 20 assists on 27 made field goals.

The Frogs conclude their six-game homestand on Monday at 7 p.m. against Houston Christian at Schollmaier Arena. The game will be available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

TCU improved to 1-0 all-time against Alcorn State.
The Frogs improved to 46-1 all-time against SWAC opponents and (3-0) this season.
The Frogs improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 2017-2018 season when they were 12-0.
The Frogs were 32-of-39 from the free throw line. It was the most made free throws for a TCU team under Jamie Dixon and the most since making 41 against Wofford on Dec. 10, 2016. It was the most attempts since the season opener last year when TCU attempted 39 against UAPB.
TCU recorded 20 assists. It was the fourth time this season with at least 20 assists in a game.
TCU improved to 87-13 against nonconference opponents under Dixon.
TCU improved to 95-33 overall and 61-5 in nonconference games under Jamie Dixon in Schollmaier Arena.
Under Dixon, TCU is 73-11 in the months of November and December combined.

Individual Notes

JaKobe Coles scored a game-high 20 points. It was the third time he led TCU in scoring this season. It was the third game of 20 or more points in his career and one shy of matching his career high.
Coles was 4-of-5 from 3-point range, which was a career-high for makes from beyond-the-arc.
Micah Peavy scored 11 points for his fifth consecutive game in double-digits.
Peavy was 2-of-6 from 3-point range. He made a career-high two 3-pointers for the seventh time in his career.
Essam Mostafa had a season-high 10 points. It was his 62nd career game in double-figures.
Trevian Tennyson was 1-of-4 from 3-point range. He has made at least one 3-pointer in 69 out of 75 games over three seasons.
Avery Anderson III tied a season-high with a game-high five assists.
Emanuel Miller scored 10 points, his fourth-straight game in double-digits.
Miller had a team-high six rebounds.
Jameer Nelson Jr. had 13 points. His fifth consecutive double-digit scoring effort this season and the 81st of his career.
Cole Despie played in the final two minutes and recorded his first career free throw. He was 2-of-2 from the line and also had his first career assist.
