Jong’s third set bagel clinches TCU’s fourth Top 5 win of the year
WACO – No. 3 TCU men's tennis (19-3) emerged victorious after a grueling 4-3 battle with No. 4 Baylor on Sunday afternoon at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco. The Horned Frogs won the doubles point with a late break from the No. 1 pairing before winning two of five straight set results in singles. With the match on the line, Sander Jong stepped up, winning his third set, 6-0, to secure the Horned Frog victory.
"This is a great win for the team, coming back a week later after Baylor thumped us at home" head coach David Roditi said. "We talked about how we were going to prepare for this match, we took care of some details and we were ready today. It started in doubles, our No. 3 doubles hadn't played to the level we can, we have two really great doubles players there, so that was a great turnaround. For No. 1 double to win again was huge. We needed that doubles point. In singles, we had some great tiebreakers in the first set from Jake Fearnley and Juan Carlos Aguilar. Sander Jong has done such a great job for us and against Baylor, he got off to a great start in the third set to help us get to four points. The MVP goes to Fearnley, winning in doubles and then reversing a match that he lost in straight sets last week, to get the win in straight sets today shows a lot of strength and fortitude to be able to do that. The interesting thing was, as competitive as the first sets were, the second sets went away quickly. We need to work on staying on the court after we lose the first set as we get ready for an absolute war on Saturday. It's a great start to conference play, 2-0. We get to battle the Longhorns on Saturday for Senior Day. I can't wait to see everyone out at the match. Your support this season has been amazing and we can't wait to play in front of you again. Go Frogs!!"
The win snapped a four-match losing streak to Baylor. Over the past 34 matches, dating back to last season, TCU is 28-6, with Baylor responsible for four of those six losses.
Doubles play was a challenge, as Baylor got out in front at No. 2. Doubles quickly and eventually won that match, 6-1, leaving TCU without any room for error on the other two courts. The No. 3 pairing of Juan Carlos Aguilar and Pedro Vives came through, breaking two of their opponents final three service games to win five of the final six games, winning 6-3. Just after the result was final on three, the No. 1 pair of Luc Fomba and Jake Fearnley delivered a late break, going in front, 6-5, before Fearnley held serve for a 7-5 victory, clinching the doubles point for TCU.
