TCU Wins Home Opener, Competes at CSCAA

FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU swimming and diving team opened the 2018-2019 season in split squad action on Saturday. Most of the team stayed at home and began the season with a solid win over UT-Permian Basin. The men won by a score of 194-124, while the women won 203-102. Seven Horned Frogs competed at the CSCSAA Open Water National meet in Lawrence, Kan.
HOME OPENER
Two Frogs earned automatic CSCAA National Invitational Championship (NIC) cuts on Saturday. Maddie Ibrahim record a 27.17 cut in the 50 back, while Joao Andrade earned cuts in the 50 back (23.78) and 100 IM (52.79).
Six other Frogs finished with bonus NIC cuts. Brendan Barry and Kade Knoch earned bonus cuts in 50 back, both finishing in 24.81. A pair of seniors finished with bonus cuts in the 50 fly, with John Smith finishing in 23.28 and Micaela Roemer finishing in 26.22. In their TCU debuts, a pair of freshmen earned bonus cuts as well. Noah Cumby finished the 100 free in 46.30, while Hugh McPherson finished the 100 IM in 54.12.
TCU took the top three spots in all four diving events. Derek Bowers won both the men's three-meter and one-meter dives, while Isabella Ashdown won the women's three-meter dive and Connie Deighton won the one-meter.
CSCAA OPEN WATER
TCU sent three men and four women to Lawrence, Kan., for CSCAA Open Water Nationals. The men's trio of Dayne Odendaal, Rhory Legendre, and Kevin Chao combined for a fourth-place team finish in the 5,000m race. Odendaal led the way for TCU, finishing fifth overall with a mark of 59:35.14. Legendre followed in 19th (1:02:56.12) and Chao finished 30th (1:03.18.90).
Emily Visagie, Nicqueline Rettberg, Megan Morris and Amanda Key represented TCU on the women's side and finished fifth as a team. Rettberg was the first Horned Frog to finish, finishing in 1:05.08.33 for 16th place. Morris finished 25th (1:06:12.25), followed by Visagie in 34th (1:06:41.70) and Key in 53rd (1:10:29.26).

TCU will return to action at the FIU Fall Classic. The two-day meet is scheduled to begin Friday, October 5.
