FORT WORTH, Texas - A match that started outdoors and then ended indoors finished in the No. 9 TCU men's tennis team's favor as they scored the 4-0 sweep of No. 26 USF on Monday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs (14-4) and the Bulls (13-8) started the match outdoors and TCU jumped out to the 1-0 lead after scoring the doubles point. The No. 23 pair of Guillermo Nuñez and Alex Rybakov got their sixth straight victory with a 6-1 win on court two before Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson upped their winning streak to three with a 6-4 victory on court three.
Reese Stalder got the straight-set win at the No. 6 spot to put TCU up 2-0 before the rain started to fall and the rest of the match was forced indoors. No. 21 Rybakov only needed one service game before he closed out his match with Justin Roberts with a 6-3, 7-5 victory. Just moments later, Johnson, who was appearing in his first singles match this spring season, downed Vadym Kalyuzhnyy, 7-5, 6-2 to secure the team's ninth straight victory this season.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"I have been stressing out about this match forever. We had to play on a Monday with Cameron Norrie and myself coming back from Davis Cup. He played on indoor clay in France and arrived here late last night and then had to play at the No. 1 spot. It just shows how tough he is and what a competitor he is against a really good team. USF beat SMU yesterday and they have as good of a coaching staff as anybody in the world really. USF has world class players. You could see the adjustments they made after the first sets and there goes Ashley (Fisher) and Jimmy Arias flying around making adjustments and the next thing you know, we are in a battle in every singles match. I am happy the boys got the win. For them to not say a word when we had to go back inside and (Alex) Rybakov served it out like a professional player would. To see Trevor (Johnson) clinching his first match back is just too good of a story. I am very happy and now we have a huge conference match on Thursday and we hope to see all our fans out here on at 5:30 p.m., against Texas Tech. That is always a tough one and they are a very competitive team."
