In her first collegiate 5,000-meter race, Goertzen took home gold at the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship in Ames, Iowa on Friday. The Woodbury, Minn. native shattered the previous school record by more than 20 seconds as she blazed to a 16:02.80 finish in the race, beating out second place by over 12 seconds. The following day, Goertzen doubled up and competed in the 3,000-meter race. The sophomore earned bronze in the event behind two seniors with a time of 9:23.01. Her performance at the conference championship earned the women's team 16 total points.
Goertzen's 5K race garnered national recognition as she made the top 10 performances list (by event) in the country across all conferences this past weekend.
Goertzen and the rest of the Horned Frogs will return to the track as the team opens the outdoor season with a home meet on March 17-18 at the Lowdon Track & Field Complex.
Nuñez, a native of Santiago, Chile, played a pivotal role in the TCU men's tennis team 4-1 upset over No. 48 UCF on Saturday afternoon. The No. 14 pair of Alex Rybakov and Nuñez won their sixth straight match as they broke UCF and then held to grab the doubles point with a 6-4 win. Nuñez went on to record a 6-3, 6-2 victory against UCF's Enrique Paya to seal the deal.
Up next, the men's tennis team will take a short road trip to Metroplex rival SMU on Thursday, March 2 at 4:30 p.m., in Dallas at the SMU Tennis Complex.
