FORT WORTH, Texas - In the team's final doubleheader of the season, the No. 2 TCU men's tennis team scored two wins on Friday with a 4-1 win over No. 26 Rice and a 4-0 sweep of UT Arlington to increase the team's winning streak at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to 24 consecutive matches.
The Horned Frogs (17-2) have now put together 12 straight wins this season and opened the day against the Owls (17-6) by quickly taking the doubles point, before claiming three of the four completed singles matches. Trevor Johnson picked up a doubles win and victory No. 18 on the season in singles and now has won five straight matches in singles action. No. 3 Cameron Norrie quickly put away Jamie Malik, 6-2, 6-2, at the top position, while No. 15 Alex Rybakov closed out the victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court two.
In the final match of the day against the Mavericks (14-8), Norrie and Reese Stalder each put together two wins in doubles and singles to help TCU to its seventh sweep of the season. Norrie teamed up once again with Rybakov for a 6-2 victory, while Stalder paired with Hudson Blake for a 6-2 win as well. Norrie earned win No. 17 this season and was first off the court with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Guanarteme Nuez before Stalder followed with win No. 15 over Pablo Colvee, 6-1, 6-1. Trey Daniel completed the day for the Frogs by finishing off Mauricio Del Rio, 6-2, 6-0 on court five to complete the sweep.
Quotes of the Matches
Head Coach David Roditi
"It is pretty scary playing Rice and UT Arlington on the same day. UTA has been having a pretty good year and they have been winning quite a bit and Rice just beat Texas Tech who was top 10 in the nation. It was scary, but I am glad that we got through it with really good performances. I thought our top of our lineup played really well against Rice and it was a good performance by Trevor Johnson again. When we win the doubles point at home, it is tough for anyone to take four singles matches from us.
"Now we have probably the hardest week all year coming up against a very good and confident SMU team that has been doing really well and then we start the Big 12 on Friday and Sunday against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. We are definitely going to need our fans. I know it has been pretty cold out here and not the best of weather, but we take pride and our guys love playing in front of good crowds so I am hoping that next week is the beginning of some really good environments and they can give us that home court advantage and help us get through the next week of competition."
