FORT WORTH – Another solid effort at the rifle range helped the TCU women's rifle team cap a perfect regular season, its first since the 2012-13 campaign. TCU defeated UTEP 4,696-4,602 on Saturday.
The Horned Frogs fired a team score of 2,323 in smallbore and followed with a 2,373 in air rifle to account for the aggregate score.
In smallbore, Rachel Garner paced the field, tying her personal best with a 587. She has fired a 580 or better in all 12 matches this season. It's the fifth time she's finished first in the discipline this year. Joining her atop the leader board were Hannah Black (581), Sally Li (578) and Ariana Grabowski (577).
The Frogs accounted for the top seven scores in air rifle. All four members that made up for the team score fired a 591 or better. Mindy Miles' dominance in air rifle continued as she fired a 596, the seventh time this season she has fired a score of 596 or better. Nicole Hankey was close behind with a 594. Garner finished third with a mark of 592, followed by Li with a 591.
Not factoring in the team score, but shining as individuals were Barrett Ray and Katie Bridges. Ray surpassed the 590 mark in air rifle for the first time in her career, shooting a 591. Bridges tied her personal best with her highest score of the season as she fired a 589 in air rifle.
Garner had the best day on the range as she turned in the top aggregate score of her career. She paired her 592 in air rifle with a 587 in smallbore to post an aggregate score of 1179.
With the regular season complete, the Horned Frogs will turn their sights to the next weekend's NCAA Qualifier. The score posted in that match will be one of the four scores used by the NCAA to determine the field of eight for the 2016 NCAA Championships set for March 11-12 in Akron, Ohio.
