BIG 12 SPRING MEETING
Greetings from Arizona! I'm here with my conference counterparts as well as other administrators and head coaches from football and men's and women's basketball. It's our Big 12 Spring Meeting. As you've seen from the media coverage, there are plenty of topics on the table for discussion.
FINALS WEEK
We hope all TCU students are having a successful final exams week! My favorite day of the year is coming up on Saturday. There's nothing better than seeing our student-athletes donning the cap and gown at commencement. #FinishStrong
FROGS GOING PRO
Congratulations to Paul Dawson (Cincinnati Bengals) and Tayo Fabuluje (Chicago Bears) on their selections in the 2015 NFL Draft! We'll have a total of nine players from our 2014 team headed to NFL camps.
MILESTONES
We're extremely proud of baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle for earning his 500th win in a Horned Frogs uniform with Friday's 9-4 victory at West Virginia. We have the best baseball coach in the country in Schloss! He is a true TCU and Fort Worth treasure.
TURF INSTALL
Today is a big day on the facilities front as we begin installation of the new turf in the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility. It will be about a three-week process with work completed the first week in June.
STAT OF THE WEEK
We're one of just 14 schools nationally to have our men's and women's golf as well as men's and women's tennis programs in the postseason. For head coach Bill Montigel, it's the 26th consecutive year to reach the NCAA Regionals. It's a truly amazing streak and the longest postseason run for any sport in our athletics history!
POSTSEASON TIME
Best wishes to women's golf, men's tennis and women's tennis as they begin NCAA postseason play this week. Women's golf will be in St. George, Utah, for its Regional that starts Thursday. Men's tennis will host Marist, NC State and Tulsa at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Our opening match is Friday at 5 p.m. versus Marist. The winner of our match and NC State versus Tulsa, being played Friday at 2 p.m., will play Saturday at 5 p.m. Women's tennis will be at the College Station Regional. Our opening-round match is Saturday at 9 a.m. against Notre Dame.
HONOR ROLL
Congratulations to baseball's Alex Young on being named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week! He tossed three-hit ball while striking out eight over eight scoreless innings in Sunday's 5-0 win at West Virginia, completing a three-game sweep for us in Morgantown.
BASEBALL HOSTS KU
Our fourth-ranked baseball program is atop the Big 12 standings with a 13-5 conference mark. The final home series is this weekend versus Kansas. First pitch on Friday is at 6:30 p.m. with game two on Saturday at 4 p.m. Sunday's series finale is at 1 p.m.
PHOTO OF THE WEEK
Special thanks to my friend Bob Rollins for sending in the below photo of his son, Corey, who recently earned his United States Navy wings. Corey is pictured at his graduation with fellow 2010 TCU alumnus and friend Tim Halperin, who you might remember from American Idol. Corey is now based in San Diego and is flying the MH-60S (Grayhawk) helicopter.
NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week's Answer: Dan Aykroyd, as Louis Winthorpe III in Trading Places, said, "The Dukes are going to corner the entire frozen orange juice market!"
This Week: "Racing is life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting."
COMPLIANCE CORNER
The baseball coaches at Ocean State University (OSU) want to include pictures from last year's camp in the online brochure for this year's camp. One of the pictures includes a group of prospects learning how to field a ground ball. Is it permissible to include such a picture in OSU's camp advertisements?
Yes. NCAA Staff Interpretation - 4/24/15 - Photographs of Prospective Student-Athletes in Camp or Clinic Information and Advertisements (I) - states that a photograph of a prospective student-athlete (or multiple prospective student-athletes) taken during the normal course of camp or clinic activities (e.g., instruction, competition, meals, entertainment) may be used in camp or clinic information and advertisements for future camps or clinics. It is generally not permissible to use a photograph of a prospective student-athlete (or multiple prospective student-athletes) taken in circumstances other than the normal course of camp or clinic activities (e.g., staged or arranged photographs) in camp or clinic information or advertisements. However, once a prospective student-athlete has signed a National Letter of Intent, the institution's written offer of admission and/or financial aid or the institution has received his or her financial deposit in response to the institution's offer of admission, a staged or arranged photograph may be used in camp or clinic information and advertisements only in the same manner in which it is permissible to use photographs of student-athletes.
