FORT WORTH, Texas - The inaugural season for TCU sand volleyball kicked-off on Friday afternoon against No. 16 Arizona, with the Wildcats coming away with a 5-0 victory in Tucson at the Arizona Sand Volleyball Courts.
The Horned Frogs (0-1) played in their first-ever matchup against the Wildcats (1-0) in the opener of the Arizona Invitational.
"It was awesome to get out and play in a hostile environment," head coach Erik Peterson said. "Arizona is a well coached team and they had amazing crowd support for their home opener.
"It was exciting to look out and see all of these athletes competing in their first collegiate sand competition. We've identified some things we need to work on and the team as a whole is committed to making those changes. They are hungry to get out there and have another crack at it."
In the first set of matches, Blaire Pickens and Sarah Grantham took on Taylor Arizobal and Allie Cook on the first court. The Wildcats were able to take the first set, 21-4, before the TCU duo fought back in a tighter battle in the second set. Pickens and Grantham played point-for-point, but Arizona came out on top, 21-18.
The Perkins twins saw action on court two, while Mia Swanegan and Sarita Mikals represented TCU on court three. The Frogs battled, but Arizona ultimately came out on top in both matches to sweep the first set of matches.
The second set of matches pitted the top three duos on each team against each other, with Shane Peters and Natalie Gower representing TCU on court one against Madi Kingdon and Kaitlyn Leary. Macy Capen and Ashley Smith faced off with Madison and McKenna Witt on court two, while Alexia Heist and Sutton Sunstrum went up against Kendall Polan and Rachel Rhoades on court three.
Arizona was once again able to get the sweep in the final three matches to complete the victory for the Wildcats.
TCU will continue action at the invitational with a double-header on Saturday. The Frogs will open with Arizona State at 10 a.m., CT, before taking on No. 15 Tulane at 2 p.m., CT.
