FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU sand volleyball team dropped both matches on Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Arizona Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. The Horned Frogs lost 5-0 to Arizona State and No. 15 Tulane.
The Horned Frogs (0-3) opened the day by going point-for-point with the Sun Devils (1-2) before taking on their second ranked opponent of the season in the No. 15 Green Waves (3-1).
"We are doing a lot of good things out there on the court," head coach Erik Peterson said. "We have a chance to look back and identify things we need to work on, but that is part of the game. The girls are making the right decisions and we can see what they are thinking. They are just not quite executing it."
In the match against Arizona State, TCU was able to snag its first set victory of the inaugural season as Blaire Pickens and Sarah Grantham won the first set, 21-19, over Kizzy Willey and Sydney Palmer at the No. 4 position. The duo could not keep the momentum going as the Sun Devils took the final two sets, 21-7, 15-5, to take the match.
TCU battled hard in the other four matches, but could not come away with wins as Arizona State swept the other four courts in straight sets.
In the second match of the double header on Saturday, TCU faced No. 15 Tulane and once again took a set. Sarita Mikals and Mia Swanegan stepped in at the No. 5 position and split the opening two sets with Miah Diirell and Sarah Strasner. Tulane won the first set, 21-17, before the Frog duo fought back to take the second set 21-17. The pair could not get the win, as Tulane prevailed in the final set, 15-12.
The Frogs could not pick up wins on the rest of the courts, as the Green Waves took straight-set wins to complete the match.
TCU will stay in Arizona and head to Phoenix to take on another dual header at Grand Canyon on Sunday, March 8. The Frogs will face the No. 19 Antelopes at 2:30 p.m., CT, before taking on New Mexico at 4:30 p.m., CT.
