SENIOR DAY
Make sure to arrive early and wear purple for Saturday's 11 a.m. football game versus Iowa State. We'll be recognizing our outstanding senior class in a pre-game ceremony. This group has been instrumental in helping us usher in a new era of TCU football with our entrance into the Big 12 Conference and the opening of the new Amon G. Carter Stadium.
TRAVEL TIP
If headed to Saturday's football game via I-35W, please make note of some upcoming construction on I-35W. On Friday, Dec. 5, and Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m. nightly, all lanes of northbound and southbound I-35W will be closed. Traffic will be redirected along the Frontage Road. During this same time period, all lanes of eastbound and westbound NE 28th Street at I-35W will also be closed. Eastbound traffic will be redirected to Northside Drive and westbound traffic will be redirected to 33rd Street.
These closures will allow contractors to demolish the NE 28th Street Bridge, the first bridge demolition in the southern segment of the I-35W reconstruction project.
UNDEFEATED
In case you missed it, our men's basketball program is receiving votes in this week's top-25 polls. After defeating Bradley and Mississippi State to win the Corpus Christi Coastal Classic, we're off to a 7-0 start! We return to action Thursday at 8 p.m. at Ole Miss in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
SUNDAY HOOPS
Our women's basketball program hosts No. 5 Texas A&M on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Rec Center. A limited number of tickets will be available for sale on the day of the game. The first 100 students in attendance will receive a free long-sleeve Christmas t-shirt. Make sure to stay in your seat at halftime as we'll have Scottish bag pipers performing a holiday special.
VOLLEYBALL UPDATE
In case you missed it, we announced on Monday that Prentice Lewis will not be returning as our volleyball coach. We very much appreciate the contributions Prentice made to TCU and our volleyball program over the last 13 years. However, we did not reach the level of success that we expect, and it was time for a change in the leadership of our volleyball program. A national search is already underway for a new volleyball head coach, who will also oversee the sand volleyball program beginning play this spring.
HONOR ROLL
Congratulations to co-offensive coordinator and inside receivers coach Doug Meacham! He's been selected as one of five finalists for the Broyles Award, presented to the nation's top assistant coach. It was also great to see Trevone Boykin named as one of five finalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award with linebacker Paul Dawson earning his second Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor after his 10 tackles, including two for loss, and interception in our Thanksgiving win at Texas. Additionally, volleyball's Ashley Smith was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.
UNBELEEEVABLE REUNION SET
One of the more special teams in our football history is the 1984 squad. This weekend, we'll be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Coach Jim Wacker's "Unbeleeevable" season that saw us post an 8-4 record and reach the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston. Led by Heisman Trophy finalist Kenneth Davis, we reached as high as No. 11 in the national polls. From the season-opening 62 points at Utah State to the last-minute win at Arkansas, we had many memorable victories. All players and support staff from the 1984 TCU football team are urged to attend. CLICK HERE for more information or call Greg Blackwell with the TCU Lettermen's Association at (817) 257-5471.
ON THE DOCKET
In addition to our Saturday football game versus Iowa State at 11 a.m., we have a Sunday 1 p.m. home women's basketball contest against No. 5 Texas A&M. After playing at Ole Miss on Thursday at 8 p.m., men's basketball returns home for a Tuesday 7 p.m. game versus Furman.
NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week's Answer: In the classic baseball movie Sandlot, it was Babe Ruth who told Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, "Heroes get remembered, but legends never die."
This Week: "What is this? A center for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read... if they can't even fit inside the building?"
COMPLIANCE CORNER
Trav L. Ling is currently a basketball student-athlete at Bay State College. Trav will be transferring and enrolling at Ocean State University (OSU) in January. Due to the extenuating circumstances surrounding the transfer, Trav received a waiver of the one-year residence requirement.
Since Trav is permitted to compete in January with the waiver and assuming he meets all NCAA PTD requirements, can he compete for OSU starting in the spring 2015 semester?
No. NCAA Bylaw 14.5.5.5 states that in baseball and basketball, a student-athlete who initially enrolls at the certifying institution as a full-time student after the conclusion of the first term of the academic year and qualifies for an exception to the one-year residence requirement shall not be eligible for competition until the ensuing academic year.
