Dec. 18, 2014 FINALS WEEK
We hope all our students have had a successful week with final exams. One of my favorite days of the year is graduation, and we look forward to that on Saturday. We'll have 24 student-athletes donning the cap and gown that day.
VOLLEYBALL UPDATE
I'm currently with several members of our senior staff in Oklahoma City at the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship. We've had very strong interest in our vacant head volleyball coach position, and we're meeting with several candidates here.
CHICK-FIL-A PEACH BOWL BOUND
We enjoyed hosting representatives from the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on campus earlier this week and can't wait to soon see our friends again in Atlanta.
CHRISTMAS SHOPPING
It's been incredibly rewarding to see your passion and pride in the Horned Frogs reflected in our merchandise sales. We have enjoyed record numbers this month in purchases from our Team Store and online store. If you're thinking about the perfect Christmas gift for someone, you can't beat some Big 12 football championship apparel as well as Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl merchandise. COACH P SURPRISES STUDENTS
It was great to see Gary Patterson surprise our students with a special Wednesday night autograph session at the TCU Barnes & Noble. Coach Patterson is more than just about football, and he wanted to show his appreciation for the best student body and student section in the country.
Congrats to Coach Patterson on the six National Coach of the Year honors he's received so far this season! He is truly a TCU and Fort Worth treasure.
FROM THE HARD HATS
In addition to our basketball renovation, which now has steel in place on the south side, we have plenty of action on the facilities front. As the below photo shows, the new press box for the Lowdon Track and Field Complex has arrived. Work is also continuing next door at Charlie and Marie Lupton Baseball Stadium at Williams-Reilly Field with the installation of a new turf apron.
MEN'S HOOPS AT THE REC CENTER
Please note that our Dec. 29 men's basketball home game with Tennessee State has had a location change. We will play the game on campus in the Rec Center. The tip is at 7 p.m.
ON THE DOCKET
Both our basketball programs will be in action this weekend. Our undefeated men take on UTSA on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center. The men are also home Monday night at 7 versus Grambling State.
The 10-0 record for head coach Trent Johnson's squad marks the best start in program history. We're also just outside the Associated Press Top 25. Based on votes received, we're 27th.
Arrive early if you're coming to the men's game on Saturday night. The first 500 fans will receive a free Christmas T-shirt. We'll also have SuperFrog Santa available for pre-game pictures.
Our women have a 6-3 record and will host Sam Houston State on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Rec Center in their final game before the Christmas break.
NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week's Answer: Bob Barker, arguably the greatest game show host ever, said to Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore, "I can't believe you're a professional golfer. I think you should be working at the snack bar."
This Week: "Look Mommy, the rhino is getting too close to the car."
COMPLIANCE CORNER
The Ocean State University football team will be traveling to their bowl site later this month. While in the area, the coaches would like to go visit the recruits that will be enrolling in school in January. It will be a dead period, but these recruits have all signed their written offers of admission and financial aid. Is it permissible for the coaches to go the recruits' houses to say hi and happy holidays?
While it is okay for all other sports, it is not permissible for FBS institutions to have contact with prospects during the December or January dead periods. This is true regardless of whether the prospects have signed their written offer of admission or financial aid or provided a financial deposit to the institution.
NCAA Staff Interpretation - 12/12/13 - In-Person Contact with Prospective Student-Athlete During Football Bowl Subdivision December or January Dead Period After Commitment (I) - states that, in bowl subdivision football, it is not permissible for an institution to make an in-person, on- or off-campus contact with a prospective student-athlete during the December or January dead period, even after the prospective student-athlete has signed the institution's written offer of admission and/or financial aid or the institution has received the prospective student-athlete's financial deposit in response to its offer of admission. However, it is permissible for the institution to make such contact with a prospective student-athlete who has arrived in the locale of the institution for initial full-time enrollment.
