
North Carolina Tops TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU swimming and diving team earned a pair of 200-freestyle relay titles and four event crowns against North Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the TCU Recreation Center Natatorium. The Horned Frogs fell to the Tarheels 109-188 on the men's side and 97-200 on the women's side.
In the season opener for the TCU men, Sophomore Adam Szilagyi picked up the first event title, winning the 100-yard backstroke with a 48.90. Szilagyi also had the Horned Frogs top time in the 100-yard butterfly (49.75) and swam the third leg for the 200-yard medley relay team that finished second with a 1:32.06.
Junior Cooper Robinson - the reigning Big 12 200-yard backstroke champion - continued his dominance in the event, touching the wall at 1:46.19, a full three seconds prior to the second-place finisher. Junior Thor Stenfjord added a second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:31.49) and was TCU's top finisher in the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.93).
The Horned Frogs posted strong performances from many newcomers, led by freshman John Remetta who won the 200-yard individual medley with a 1:55.60. Sophomore transfer Anthony McMurry had a pair of strong performances, finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.91) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (46.38) while freshman Garrett Hills added a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (21.35). Hills and McMurry also swam the second and anchor legs, respectively, along with Corey Nix and Ryan Wilcox, for TCU's winning 200-yard freestyle team (1:23.09).
Senior Gabi Korac led the TCU women, picking up a win in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.02), finishing third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.70) and posting the Horned Frogs top time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.75). Sophomore Mikayla Winkler added a pair of second-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.71) and 500-yard freestyle (4:59.35). Winkler also anchored TCU's winning 200-yard freestyle relay team, along with Julie Grace Sanders, Mackenzie Schuler and Meagan Thompson, recording a 1:35.35.
Sophomore Sara Brzozowski notched TCU's top time in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:17.52) while sophomore transfer Lyndsie Gibson had the Horned Frogs' top times in the 100-yard backstroke (57.77) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.14).
Junior Ricky Bradley paced the men in diving competition, posting a 291.68 in 1-meter diving and 309.08 in 3-meter diving. On the women's side, sophomore Kristen Connolly was TCU's top finisher from 3-meters with a 256.43 while junior Courtney Cheek paced the Horned Frogs from 1-meter with a 221.03.
The TCU women return to the natatorium on Friday, Nov. 1 when they host San Diego State University at 12 p.m. The Horned Frog men are next slated to compete in the Texas Shootout in San Antonio, Texas on Nov. 9.
