Scherer Claims Individual Title; TCU Sits Third After Day One

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU junior Sarah Scherer won the smallbore individual NCAA Rifle Championships, the second of her career, and the Horned Frogs sit in third after the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships.Scherer was tied with Army's Michael Matthews heading into the finals after shooting a 589 in the individual relays. She fired a 99.6 in the finals to win the National Championship, defeating Matthews 688.6-687.6. The title is the second of her career as she took home the championship as a freshman in 2010.
The Frogs sit in third place as a team after shooting a team aggregate score of 2323, five points behind Kentucky's top mark of 2328. Army fired a team score of 2325 to finish second in the smallbore title race.
Mattie Brogdon got the Frogs off to a solid start in the first relay of the day, shooting a 581. In the second relay, Caitlin Morrissey fired a 576 and Catherine Green shot a 571. Scherer and Sarah Beard finished the afternoon shooting solid scores of 589 and 581, respectively.
The championships wrap up Saturday with two air rifle relays beginning at 7 a.m. (CST). The individual finals will take place at Noon (CST).
