ARLINGTON, Texas - The TCU cross country program turned in solid performances in the second race of the 2011 season at the UTA Season Opener. The women's team earned runner-up honors for the second-straight meet, while the men finished third overall.
"I was proud of the way our tops girls ran today," TCU cross country coach Liz Wort said. "Agnes [Kemboi] and Tricia [Terry] really ran well. I thought they really executed our race plan. Our team didn't have a lot of time to prepare for this race, running two meets in 10 days, so we will look forward to getting more than two weeks to prepare for our next race."
Overall, TCU's women tallied 43 points, finishing second overall behind regionally-ranked SMU (38 points), but concluding the meet ahead of Baylor (52 points), UTA (76) and Northwood (138 points). The men's team earned third place honors with 52 points, while Baylor won the overall team title with 19 points.
On the women's side, junior Agnes Kemboi paced the Frogs with a two-mile time of 10:56. The Kenya native earned second-place honors for the second race in a row. Kemboi came into the meet after accepting Mountain West Athlete of the Week accolades at the North Texas Metroplex Opener on Sept. 1.
Junior Tricia Terry also enjoyed a solid performance Saturday, claiming fifth place with a clocking of 11:14, while senior Kelly Dawson followed closely to cross the finish line at 11:16 for seventh place.
Freshman Preston Newsome led the men's squad with a four-mile clocking of 21:15 for 10th place overall. Freshman Taylor Moult also cracked the top-20, running 21:38 to take 17th place.
"Preston ran really well in only his second cross country race ever," Wort said. "He worked hard this last week and I think that he has surprised even himself with his performance."
TCU will now enjoy 20 days to prepare to get ready for the historic Cowboy Jamboree on Oct. 1 in Stillwater, Okla.
