Feb. 23, 2011
LIFE SKILLSUnder the direction of Kathy Raines, February is an exciting time for our CHAMPS/Life Skills program, both in the seminar topics we're offering and in the number of former TCU student-athletes involved in leading these seminars. Already this month, we have provided career networking training and opportunities for our sophomores, juniors and seniors. We're presenting a two-part series about the changes in psychological and nutritional needs student-athletes face as they transition out of training and competition after graduation. The Athletics Department is also co-hosting, with the TCU Alcohol and Drug Education Center, a special presentation about alcohol awareness as part of the Safe Spring Break Campaign.
LUPTON STADIUM RECORD WATCH
TCU was definitely a popular destination this past weekend. Led by our record-breaking opening night crowd of 6,099 at Lupton Stadium, the top three single-game attendance marks in our baseball program's history were set against Kansas. Our three-game weekend total of 14,893 shattered the previous series record of 10,312 from the Texas Tech visit last year.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR
Make sure to head back out to Lupton Stadium this weekend as we host Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series. First pitch is Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Titans are one of the more storied programs in collegiate baseball, and it's been great to have them on the schedule the last few years.
TENNIS (OR PIZZA) ANYONE?
We host Texas A&M in men's tennis tonight at 6 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. In case you're hungry around that time, don't forget that complimentary Mama's Pizza is provided at every home men's and women's match this spring.
SPECIAL GUESTS
On Saturday, our athletic training and sports medicine staff will be hosting the 14th Marine Battalion of Medics for a Sports Medicine Symposium. Along with the physicians of THC Bone and Joint, we will provide this group of service men and women current trends in the evaluation and treatment of common orthopedic injuries. The sports medicine staff will also present information on current taping and bracing components the medics hope to incorporate as they deal with various overuse and combat-related injuries. At the end of the meeting, we will provide the battalion with dinner and a tour of our athletics facilities before they join their families at our 7 p.m. home men's basketball game versus New Mexico.
PURPLE OUT
Pepsi has partnered with us to distribute purple t-shirts at Saturday's 7 p.m. men's basketball home game versus New Mexico. The first 3,000 fans will receive a free purple t-shirt.
AROUND THE CORNER
How about spring football starting next Friday, March 4! We're in full preparation mode for the coming season on all fronts, including our marketing theme and creative work.
THE 2011 SLATE
Now that our non-conference football schedule has been set, we'll have our complete slate with the dates of our league games, kickoff times and television schedule around April 1 when it's released by the MWC office.
AND THEN THERE WERE THREE
Just three suites remain available at the renovated Amon G. Carter Stadium. Please make sure to touch base with TCU associate athletics director Davis Babb (d.babb@tcu.edu or 817-257-5658) for more information.
CHECK THE MAILBOX
Keep an eye out for a football season-ticket holder and Frog Club donor parking packet coming to you in the mail in mid-March.
FROM THE FCA
Chauncey Franks does an outstanding job as our Fellowship of Christian Athletes-TCU Life & Character Coach. Thanks to Chauncey, FCA continues to grow its presence on the TCU athletics community. Four TCU student-athletes spoke to over 400 students at a local church youth rally. Our student-athletes have also served as counselors at an FCA junior high camp with over 600 youth. FCA conducts weekly character and leadership development with the women's soccer, women's track and field and men's basketball teams. FCA has distributed over 200 bibles to the TCU athletics community and conducts weekly male and female student-athlete bible studies. FCA also provides life coaching and personal mentorship for TCU student-athletes and coaches.
CHAMPIONSHIP TIME
A couple of our sports will be involved in Mountain West Conference Championships this week. Our swimming and diving programs will be competing in Oklahoma City, while men's and women's indoor track and field heads to Albuquerque.
ON THE LINKS
Congratulations to women's golfer Brooke Beeler for breaking our school record with a 7-under-par 65 at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla., this week. Brooke finished second in the tournament, by just one stroke, as she led us to a fourth-place finish against a very strong field.
