FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU football coach Gary Patterson held his weekly news conference Tuesday in the Four Sevens Team Room of the Meyer-Martin Athletic Complex. The 17th-ranked Horned Frogs will look to clinch their third straight outright Mountain West championship when they host UNLV Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Included below are excerpts from Patterson's meeting with the media.
On Saturday's regular-season finale with UNLV ...
"It's the last week. This is a big ballgame for us with the chance to win an outright conference title against a vastly improving UNLV team. They are very physical. That's one thing I can tell you about them on both sides of the football."
On improving from the last game against Colorado State ...
"After our outing against Colorado State, we need to improve going into the bowl season. We've got a chance to win 10 ballgames and get 47 wins for our seniors. It's a big deal for us."
On the chance to win at least 10 games for the fourth straight year and eighth time in 10 seasons ...
"Some of our toughest ballgames have been on the road. We had to go to a No. 5 Boise State, who hadn't been beaten at home. We had to beat a BYU team that really had circled that game all year long. We've had a lot of intangibles to go along with it."
On coming off a bye week ...
"We had two or three days off for Thanksgiving. We had a long practice Sunday night and another off day yesterday. We're now going to come back and practice three days in a row. The head coach has nightmares about where your team is and what you're trying to get done. It only takes one of those off days to get you beat. For us, it's business as usual."
On this year's senior class ...
"I'll remember this one because this group wasn't given much of a chance. At Boise State, they were 15-point underdogs. You've got to give credit to the senior class, and really the whole football team, for where we started and where we're finishing. We had a new quarterback, a makeshift offensive line and a new group of wide receivers. A lot has gone into the makeup of this group."
On the importance of winning at the end of the season ...
"Let's go be the best team that we can be. Let's keep rolling along, and we'll see how it all happens. Whatever bowl game we play in, let's go win it. I do believe winning bowl games is very important. I think it's a carryover for the following season. Losing is a disease and not just in football. If you're not careful, it spreads."
