NOTES ON A SCORECARDOur fall sports have now all reported to campus and the 2010-11 athletics season is truly just around the corner. We officially open with soccer at Texas Tech on Friday with the home opener Sunday at 1 p.m. versus Texas Southern. Please make a point to drop by Garvey Rosenthal Stadium and see the soon-to-be completed Jane Justin Field House.
THE BIG NEWS
Monday was an incredible day to be a Horned Frog. With tremendous pride, we announced a $105 million renovation of Amon G. Carter Stadium. Work will begin immediately after our final home game this season. This project defines what makes TCU special. To raise $90 million in six months speaks volumes of the TCU and Fort Worth communities. We must recognize the vision and dream that Danny Morrison, my predecessor, had in 2006. The project began then with Clarence Scharbauer being appointed chairman of our stadium renovation committee. It was a compete team effort from our Chancellor to our Board of Trustees and our entire staff led by associate athletics directors Davis Babb and Jack Hesselbrock and the best football coach in America - Gary Patterson. Coach was very gracious in the giving of his time to meet with prospective donors and be on call when needed. We're a top-10 football program and we needed a top-10 stadium.
THE WORD IS OUT ON THE FROGS
Our football program continues to receive outstanding exposure nationally. Sports Illustrated has us ranked fifth in its College Football Preview with a full page dedicated to the Horned Frogs. There's an incredible dollar value attached to TCU having its name on the front cover as part of SI's Top 10.
LET'S MAKE PURPLE REIGN
As part of our Go Purple campaign, we are gearing up for the next official Go Purple Friday on Sept. 3. New friends are joining the movement every day like West 7th and its many partners, Albertson's, Pappas Burger and Boomerjacks. We appreciate all the support from everyone.
We currently have eight school districts on board to bring middle school students to a football game this fall. We have secured sponsorships to pay for the ticket, a TCU T-shirt and a food and beverage item. Corporate sponsors of the "Energy Zone" include Chesapeake Energy, Collins & Young and BNSF.
We're truly gearing up for the upcoming season in all aspects. Last weekend, we filmed the football and soccer teams for the video boards.
MAKING THINGS EASY
As we mentioned last week, don't forget about our new Print at Home feature for tickets at TCU. This allows fans to purchase tickets on-line and print at their convenience. It also allows the customer to save on additional fees as the cost is $3 per order instead of the normal $8 for mail or $10 for will call.
HITTING THE LINKS
John Denton would be all over me if I didn't throw in a plug for the Oct. 11 Horned Frog Classic at Colonial Country Club. Sign up on-line at www.tcufrogclub.com. The first edition of the Gary Patterson Luncheon Series is Sept. 2, just two days before the Horned Frogs and Oregon State open the season at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. We're ranked seventh in the USA Today poll, while the Beavers are 22nd.
DON'T FORGET THE BOOKS
Our Athletic-Academic Services Office is currently working on the certification of fall student-athletes while preparing schedules and classes for all returning SAs and incoming freshmen and transfers. We are also shoring up our final grade audit for the summer classes.
