FORT WORTH – AthleticBusiness.com has named TCU’s Dutch Meyer Athletic Complex and Abe Martin Academic Enhancement Center a 2010 Facility of Merit.
The project is described as a response to the athletic department’s needs and donors’ wishes to enhance the student-athlete experience.
The specifics of the project included additional space for the athletic-academic services office, a football team community room and meeting room, as well as premium seating and a club level for football game days.
The premium seating options were built on the north side of the existing complex, which is the football-field side of the building. Built in the south end zone, the complex was built to allow for seats to be as close to the playing field as possible.
“This is an exciting and creative solution that takes full advantage of the end-zone location,” Facilities of Merit judge Chris Sgarzi said. “It gives great containment to the stadium, and it must be an imposing presence to visiting teams.”
For the student-athletes, the team facilities are located on the backside of the facility and provide easy access to team practice fields that are opposite the game field. By building the athletic facilities on the south side and fan areas on the north side, TCU was able to fulfill its requirement of keeping the two areas separate.
“It is certainly a unique structure in the sports facility landscape,” judge Nate Appleman said.
