WACO, Texas -- For the third straight year, the TCU football program's high graduation rate has been recognized by the American Football Coaches Association.
The third ranked, undefeated and Rose Bowl-bound Horned Frogs (12-0) will be making their second consecutive BCS appearance when they face No. 5 Wisconsin (11-1) Jan. 1 in the Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO.
Under head coach Gary Patterson, TCU has won at least 10 games seven times in the last nine seasons. Included in that total are six 11-win campaigns with back-to-back 12-0 regular seasons the last two years.
TCU is in the top 10 of the national rankings for the third straight season and fourth time in the last six years. The Horned Frogs are also one of just four programs to rank in the top 25 of the Associated Press poll and the top 25 of the Academic Progress Rate (APR).
TCU was cited by the AFCA for graduating at least 75 percent of its players who entered as freshmen in 2003. The AFCA utilizes the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) formula.
The GSR is based on a six-year graduation window for student-athletes and was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. The GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate. The GSR also accounts for mid-year enrollees.
Under GSR calculation, institutions are not penalized for outgoing transfer students who leave in good academic standing. These outgoing transfers are passed to the receiving institution's GSR cohort. By counting incoming transfer students and mid-year enrollees, the GSR increases the total number of student-athletes tracked for graduation by more than 37 percent.
