COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - TCU swimmer Laszlo Gyurko has been named the Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday night.
The Szekszard, Hungary, native earned two top-five individual finishes last weekend at the Southwest Collegiate Plunge against some of the nation's top competition.
In the 100-backstroke, he notched a personal-best 49.22, which is the fourth-fastest time in TCU history and was good for second place in the event. That time is the fastest in the MWC for 2010 and the 13th-fastest in the NCAA.
In the 100-freestyle, Gyurko touched the wall in 45.82 for fifth place. His 100-free time is the second-fastest in the MWC and the 51st-best time in the NCAA thus far for 2010.
The junior also suited up in four relays for the Horned Frogs, with TCU's 400-medley relay time of 3:20.77 highlighting the performances. Gyurko's freestyle leg helped lift TCU to the No. 1 time in the MWC and the fifth-fastest in the NCAA on the 2010 top times list.
Gyurko also swam in the 200-freestyle relay and 400-freestyle relay, notching times of 1:24.45 and 3:04.59. Those times are 2nd and 3rd on the 2010 MWC top times list, respectively.
TCU's 200-medley relay team, which Gyurko swam the freestyle leg once again, touched the wall in 1:32.16 for third place. That time did not qualify for the MWC top times list because the same 200-medley relay team's 1:30.95 against Air Force is the fastest time in the MWC for this year.
