FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 62 TCU men's tennis team blanked Dallas Baptist 7-0 on Monday afternoon, and passed the first tough test of the season with a 5-2 victory over 42nd-ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday evening. The two wins improved the Horned Frogs' overall record to 7-0."I'm very pleased with how we competed today against a very tough team," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "I'm really happy with the attitudes of all of the guys on the team."
TCU made quick work of Dallas Baptist in the first half of Monday's doubleheader, sweeping the singles positions in straight sets. Caleb Bulls saw his first action of the season, blanking Steven Tabrizi 6-0, 6-0 in singles play, and adding an 8-0 doubles win with partner Casey Powers.
The Frogs came out strong against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, winning all three doubles matches. The duo of Adrian Simon and Emanu Brighiu began with an 8-3 victory over Laurent Montoisy and Jose Zunino at the No. 2 spot, while the 44th-ranked TCU duo of Kriegler Brink and Cosmin Cotet clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Dmitry Novikov and Mikhail Pavlov. The TCU tandem of Zach Nichols and Jack Seider completed the sweep to remain a perfect 7-0 on the season.
In singles play, Cotet, ranked No. 27 nationally, began with his seventh consecutive straight-sets victory over Novikov by a score of 6-1, 7-5.
Brighiu, who saw his first action in the Purple and White on Monday night, started off slow to drop the first set, but rallied back to win the next two sets 6-0, 6-1 to push TCU out to a 3-0 lead.
"It was exciting to see Emanu play and I was impressed with the impact he had on the team tonight," Borelli said.
With the remaining three matches in question, Brink clinched the match with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Zunino at the No. 4 slot.
Nichols would go on to defeat Cingel by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 position.
The Frogs will return to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they will play host to No. 32 Texas Tech.
