
TCU Splits Opening Meet with Missouri State

FORT WORTH, Texas - In the opening dual meet of the season, the TCU women's swimming and diving team triumphed over Missouri State Saturday by a score of 72-41, while the men dropped a 67-46 decision to the Bears.
The women's squad was led by freshman Ashley Bolin, who contributed to three wins on Saturday. The Oshkosh, Wis., native finished first in the 200-IM with a clocking of 2:08.91 and followed with a win in the 100-free in a time of 52.31. Sophomore Maria Paula Alvarez took two events, winning the 200-free (1:53.75) and the 500-free (5:01.00).
Junior Stephanie Futscher, TCU's wins leader from a year ago, earned her first event victory of the season in the 200-fly in 2:07.02. Freshman Kaitlyn Vann picked up her first collegiate medal with the top time of 10:28.83 in the 1000-free.
The women's relay teams continued to swim well Saturday. In the 400-medley relay, the team of Brittney Martinez, Katie Rosen, Jennifer Oster and Zrinka Korac won in a time of 3:55.21. The 400-free relay squad of Korac, Vann, Bolin and Alvarez took the top spot in a time of 3:34.28.
On the men's side, junior Josh Bagby picked up a pair of wins for the Frogs. The Houston, Texas native earned the 50-free victory with a time of 21.50, while topping the field in the 100-free at 46.44. Sophomore Jeff Gettel earned TCU's other event win, taking the 200-back at 1:52.45.
Sophomore Edgar Peyro earned second-place in the 200-fly and 200-breast, while senior Jason Hauck and sophomore Trevor Woods claimed the runner-up spot in the 200-free and 500-free, respectively.
In diving, senior R.J. Hesselberg made his presence known in the team's season debut, sweeping the one- (285.97) and three-meter (324.37) events, while sophomore Kyle Callens posted runner-up scores of 277.20 and 323.62 in the one- and three-meter dives, respectively. Junior Jennifer Ferguson earned her first win of the year in the three-meter event with a score of 264.30.
TCU will hit the road this week for the first road dual meet of the season, taking on UT-Permian Basin Thursday (Oct. 9) in Andrews, Texas.
