
Frogs split meet with Utah on Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY - The TCU men's swimming and diving team (5-3, 2-3) triumphed over Utah in Salt Lake City on Saturday by a score of 136-101, while the women (4-7, 1-6) dropped a 141-95 decision to the Utes.
"I'm really happy with how we swam the last two meets at altitude," said TCU head coach Richard Sybesma. "Today was a morale booster for both teams. This was a big win for the men's program at altitude."
The men's squad was led by seniors Jonathon Berrettini and Scott McCracken, who each contributed to three wins on Saturday. Berrettini remained undefeated in the 100-back event in dual meets with a time of 50.62, followed by teammate Jeff Gettel's time of 52.10. Berrettini finished over three seconds ahead of the third-place competitor.
McCracken, a native of Houston, Texas, continued his undefeated streak in the 50-free in dual meets with a time of 21.11. Sophomore Josh Bagby swam to a runner-up finish in the 50-free with a time of 21.66.
Cameron Allred and Ben Biefnes also posted impressive performances on Saturday. In the 200-IM event, Biefnes took the top spot in a time of 1:55.90, followed by Allred (1:57.67) and Gettel (1:58.18). Allred, a senior from Fort Worth, posted his fourth win of the season in the 100-breast with a time of 58.43, followed by Biefnes' runner-up time of 59.12.
The TCU divers continued their dominance on Saturday by sweeping both events. R.J. Hesselberg won his ninth and tenth victories of the season in the one- (276.22) and three-meter (311.40) events, while Kyle Callens posted runner-up scores of 260.77 and 255.15 in the one- and three-meter dives, respectively.
In relay action, the men's 200-medley relay team of Berrettini, Allred, Jason Hauck and McCracken took the top spot in a time of 1:33.82, while the 200-free relay team of Berrettini, Bagby, Ben Iannacone and McCracken won in a time of 1:24.74.
The TCU distance swimmers highlighted the afternoon on the women's side. TCU newcomer Maria Alvarez posted a win in the 1000-free (10:35.36), followed by fellow freshman Jessica Miles (10:35.47).
The Frogs completed the sweep in the 500-free, led by Miles' time of 5:11.45. Alvarez swam to a runner-up finish with a time of 5:11.52 and Keilah Walker placed third with a time of 5:17.39.
TCU posted another sweep in the 100-breast event, as Katie Rosen took the top spot in a time of 1:06.31. Freshman Ellie Bradley followed in second place with a time of 1:06.66, while Maribeth Pottenger finished in third (1:07.80).
Meredith Grubb and Hannah Hale recorded runner-up finishes in the 100-free and three-meter dive, respectively, while Mychala Lynch and Brittney Martinez each added third-place showings.
In relay action, the 200-medley team of Martinez, Bradley, Natalie Melenric and Nikki Pappas placed second with a time of 1:49.97, while the 200-free relay team of Lynch, Miles, Grubb and Pappas also posted a runner-up finish with a time of 1:39.39.
The TCU swimming and diving teams will return to action next Saturday in Shreveport, La., against Centenary at 12 p.m. CT.
