FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU senior Celeste Green has been named one of only three individual qualifiers in three-position smallbore for the 2006 National Collegiate Rifle Championships to be held March 10-11 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The TCU rifle team also earned the highest ranking in school history as it finished the year 15th in the nation.
The 2003 NRA all-American posted a qualifying 60-shot smallbore score of 586 in the team's victory over the Virginia Military Institute at the NRA Sectionals and NCAA Qualifier in Lexington, Va. February 11-12. The mark set a new school record for the event, surpassing Green's previous high of 581 set against Air Force on February 4.
Green's performance also helped the team to a year-end ranking of 15th in the country. TCU combined a regular-season average of 4551 and a qualifying score of 4573 for a total average of 4562 to earn the placement. The Frogs' previous high ranking had come after the 1997-98 season when they finished 26th overall.
"I am very excited for both Celeste and our team," TCU head coach Karen Monez said. "Celeste has trained extremely hard over the last year and this will allow her to end her collegiate shooting career in style," Monez said. "As a team, we were able to accomplish our goal of finishing among the top schools nationally. It is important that we build on this milestone and use it as a springboard to even more success next year."
The NCAA Championships will begin with individual and team competitions in 60-shot smallbore on Friday, March 10, with the air rifle events set to take place Saturday, March 11 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Spring, Colo.
