Frogs remain third in UNLV Winter Invitational

Las Vegas, Nev. - The men's and women's swimming and diving teams remained in third place through the second day of action at the UNLV Winter Invitational. The women, with 492.5 points, trail UC-Santa Barbara (734) and UNLV (598), while the men, with 492 points, also trail UC-Santa Barbara (724) and UNLV (627).
Highlighting the day for the men was Jonathon Berrettini and R.J. Hesselberg, who each won an event on Sunday. Berrettini, a junior from Lewisville, Texas, won the 100-back event in a time of 50.12, closely followed by teammate Guillermo Ramirez in second place (50.18). Sophomore R.J. Hesselberg won the three-meter dive event with a score of 337.10, the second-highest score in TCU history.
In the 400-IM, Cameron Allred placed fifth in a time of 4:08.65, followed by Ben Biefnes' eighth-place time of 4:17.31. Senior Yousif Del Valle swam the 100-fly in a time of 49.86 to finish third, while fellow senior Alejandro Gomez placed fourth in the 200-free with a time of 1:41.16.
Senior Aran Bean swam his way to a second place finish in the 100-breast (57.60), followed by Cameron Allred, who finished fifth to secure his second top-five finish of the day.
The men concluded the day with a third place finish in the 800-free relay. The team of Alejandro Gomez, Guillermo Ramirez, Jason Hauck and Jonathon Berrettini swam the event in a time of 6:48.43.
Erica Tate turned in another impressive performance for the women as she took a second place finish in the 100-free with a time of 56.39. The time tied for fifth-fastest in TCU history.
Sophomore Cheryl Townsend also had another stellar day, finishing third in the 400-IM with a time of 4:28.11, followed by teammate Christi Cannon, who swam the event in a time of 4:34.15 to place fourth.
Seniors Tara Sullivan and Karen Sandifer finished third and fourth in the 200-free with times of 1:53.82 and 1:54.52, respectively, while Katie Rosen placed fourth in the 100-breast (1:07.04) and Lori Birkhead finished eighth in the 100-back (59.61).
Claudia Combs highlighted action for the divers as she finished fifth out of 19 competitors, slating a score of 217.95 in the one-meter dive.
The TCU team of Karen Sandifer, Tara Sullivan, Stephanie Futscher and Cheryl Townsend rounded out the day in the 800-free relay, placing fourth with a time of 7:45.09.
