
TCU swimmers sweep UTPB in second meet of the day

Midland, Texas - The TCU men's and women's swimming and diving team swept UTPB in their second meet on Thursday to open the season. The men won by a score of 104-94, while the women triumphed 99-86. Both the men and women moved to 2-0 for the season.
"I felt like our day went well and we competed hard," said TCU swimming and diving head coach Richard Sybesma.
The freshmen highlighted play again for the Frogs, with Ben Biefnes and Stephanie Futscher both recording two wins in the meet. Biefnes was victorious in the 1000-free (10:20.77) and 100-breast (1:00.90), while Futscher took the 1000-free (10:56.27) and 100-fly (1:01.29).
Freshmen Meredith Grubb and Natalie Melenric both earned the second win of their young careers, as Grubb took the top spot in the 200-free with a time of 1:58.83, and Melenric won the 50-free in a time of 25.14.
In other action for the women, junior Emily Duerringer picked up her second win of the season, taking the 100-free in a time of 54.26. Senior Karen Sandifer was victorious in the 500-free (5:23.18), while Lori Birkhead was the top swimmer in the 100-back (1:01.22). Sophomores Katie Rosen and Cheryl Townsend also got in on the action, as Rosen won the 100-breast (1:08.79) and Townsend took the 200-IM (2:11.23).
Scott McCracken recorded his first victory of the season for the men in the 50-free (21.77), while fellow junior Jonathon Berrettini was the champion in the 200-IM (2:00.05). Alejandro Gomez won his second event on the season in the 200-free with a time of 1:47.08. Stuart Silver, another freshman for the Frogs, earned his second win of the season in the 500-free (4:57.06).
In the relay events, both the men and women came away with victories in the 200-freestyle and 200-medley relay.
The next action for the Frogs will take place on Oct. 25 when the squad will host North Texas and Incarnate Word at the University Recreation Center.
