FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has developed a Purple Up initiative to increase support among its athletics teams for each other. The SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of TCU's 19 intercollegiate sports. SAAC representatives are responsible for making their teammates aware of Purple Up games and ensuring their attendance. Each sport has one designated Purple Up home contest in which student-athletes from all other athletics teams will be in attendance to provide support.
"The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee generated and implemented this idea that attendance support starts from within the Department," said Marcy Girton, TCU associate athletics director and liaison to the SAAC. "Their leadership among their peers to enhance the home event atmosphere has been outstanding."
The next scheduled Purple Up date is the Jan. 28 swimming and diving meet versus Missouri State. Other upcoming Purple Up contests include a Feb. 4 rifle contest versus Air Force as well as men's and women's tennis matches versus LSU (Feb. 26) and Fresno State (March 5), respectively.
Student-athletes will wear purple "Frogs 4 Frogs" t-shirts to identify themselves when in attendance at Purple Up games.
"As a committee, we are very excited about the unveiling of the Purple Up games as a new TCU tradition," said Julie Curtis, a member of the women's track and field team and president of the TCU SAAC. "The idea surfaced because TCU's student-athletes are a tight-knit group.
"Each sport has been able to choose which home competition they will designate as their Purple Up game. Members of the SAAC are encouraging student-athletes to make a special effort to attend these competitions as a team. It is our hope that this initiative will not only encourage those competing but also increase support and enthusiasm for TCU athletics throughout campus."
